Why am I passionate about this?

I write fairy tales and folklore, dark fantasy and horror. I have an academic background in history and archaeology. I am Australian (yes, lots of scary creatures here!) but inspired by this rich, multicultural country with First Nations tales for over 60,000 years. I am fascinated by how fairy tales, folklore and mythologies can be similar and yet so intriguingly different across time and space, written and oral telling. I love the enduring power of the fairytale and how, with each retelling, it transforms it into a new story, and as people travel, new tales are retold and transformed into a new version for a new place and generation.

The books I picked & why

Book cover of The Twisted Ones

Leanbh Pearson Why did I love this book?

I loved this book, which was a horror novel rich in folklore. I was drawn to the unique characters and the combination of horror, occult, and Irish folklore. I really enjoyed the transportation of these folklore traditions across continents, moving from Ireland to Northern Carolina.

I always feel that good horror is the sense of unease that develops throughout the story and lingers long after. It has been several years since reading this book, and the unease still lingers, and the repetitive line throughout ‘And I twist myself around like the twisted ones” casts a spell all of its own.

What is this book about?

When Mouse's dad asks her to clean out her dead grandmother's house, she says yes. After all, how bad could it be?

Answer: pretty bad. Grandma was a hoarder, and her house is stuffed with useless rubbish. That would be horrific enough, but there's more-Mouse stumbles across her step-grandfather's journal, which at first seems to be filled with nonsensical rants...until Mouse encounters some of the terrifying things he described for herself.

Alone in the woods with her dog, Mouse finds herself face to face with a series of impossible terrors-because sometimes the things that go bump in the night are…

Book cover of The Briar Book of the Dead

Leanbh Pearson Why did I love this book?

I loved this book. It's set in the dark fantasy world of her Sourdough works. I enjoyed the elements of witchcraft, occult, supernatural folklore, strong queer and female characters.

I did not want this book to end. I formed instant bonds with the female protagonist’s journey of self-awakening and self-belief and the host of characters who are all complex, multifaceted, and unique. Slatter is a fellow Australian gothic fantasy author who writes believable characters in dark fantasy worlds founded in folklore and fairytales.

What is this book about?

Set in the same universe as the acclaimed All the Murmuring Bones and The Path of Thorns (one of Oprah Daily's Top 25 Fantasy Novels of 2022), this beautifully told Gothic fairy tale of ghosts, witches, deadly secrets and past sins, will be perfect for fans of Hannah Whitten and Ava Reid.

Ellie Briar is the first non-witch to be born into her family for generations. The Briar family of witches run the town of Silverton, caring for its inhabitants with their skills and magic. In the usual scheme of things, they would be burnt for their sorcery, but the…

Book cover of Interview with the Vampire

Leanbh Pearson Why did I love this book?

I was in my teens during the ‘90s, and as a queer, gender-fluid individual, there was not a lot of good horror fiction with queer characters who were not presented in a demeaning manner, as victims, or made monstrous or stereotypical representations.

I loved Interview with the Vampire and The Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice, which showed me that sexuality and gender identity were aspects of people and not something that defined them entirely. I loved the complex characters and incredible historical research in these books.

I was a queer, gender-fluid teenager who found an understanding of myself and my place in the world through these books. I still find them formative in my development as a queer horror author.

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Anne Rice, this sensuously written spellbinding classic remains 'the most successful vampire story since Bram Stoker's Dracula' (The Times)

When Interview with the Vampire was published the Washington Post said it was a 'thrilling, strikingly original work of the imagination . . . sometimes horrible, sometimes beautiful, always unforgettable'. Now, more than forty years since its release, Anne…

Book cover of The Beast's Garden

Leanbh Pearson Why did I love this book?

I adored this book. I loved its clever fairy tale reimagining of Beauty and Beast set in 1940s Germany under the Third Reich. I enjoyed the transformation of this classic fairy tale into a historical novel that was rich in detail and unique characters and revealed much of the hidden voices of resistance within Germany during this time.

Forsyth is a fellow Australian fairytale, fantasy, and historical author who writes fantasy, history, fairy tale, and myth retellings reimagined into new settings that I find inspiring and the power of the fairy tale to be retold and made new and to endure.

By Kate Forsyth,

Book cover of Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries

Leanbh Pearson Why did I love this book?

I immediately loved this book for its alternate history, detailed folklore, and dark academic vibes. I connected with the complex characters and a strong female protagonist who was fearless of social expectations. The unique combination of folklore and an archaeology background that I share with the author Heather Fawcett was something I found familiarity with instantly.

I enjoyed the alternate history where dark academia met with the more traditional Gaslamp-style fantasy fiction to create something new. This combination of dark academia, marginalized voices, and alternate history is a style I enjoy delving into the past in new, unusual ways and revealing voices that otherwise remain unheard.
