A Killer Among Friends is a compelling and tense mystery, with many conceivable twists. The characters are convincing and well-drawn, and journalist, Jade in particular, is complex and feisty, battling her own demons and insecurities. I’d definitely want her on my side if I was in trouble.

The song title chapter headings were an enjoyable bonus. Looking forward to reading what trouble Jade gets up to in the next chapter of her adventurous life. This was a rollicking and suspenseful whodunnit that kept me guessing.

Book cover of The Guest

Barbara Gayle Austin Author Of What You Made Me Do

From my list on domestic thrillers unraveling dark family secrets.

Why am I passionate about this?

I’ve read crime fiction since I was a kid, starting with Nancy Drew and the mystery magazines—Alfred Hitchcock, Mike Shayne, and Ellery Queen. While in elementary school, I wrote mystery short stories, which my sister illustrated, and we sold them on the street corner for 25 cents apiece. In the nineties, I devoured novels by Patricia Highsmith, Ruth Rendell, and P.D. James. The 2000s introduced another generation of favorite authors, including Belinda Bauer, Chris Whitaker, and Tana French. I love too many to name! My current passion is for novels that I can really sink my teeth into, with complex characters hiding dark secrets.

The twists at the end took me by surprise, though I sensed something wasn’t quite right throughout. I just couldn’t put my finger on what exactly. Iris and Gabriel return from a holiday and are surprised to find their friend Laure staying in their home.

What begins as an annoyance escalates to a threat as long-buried secrets start to surface. The tension kept me swiping the pages on my E-reader. It’s my favorite B. A. Paris thriller so far.

Book cover of The Wrong Child

Laura Elliot Author Of Not Their Daughter

From my list on children living under assumed identities.

Why am I passionate about this?

I was a small child when I saw Elizabeth’s photograph in the newspapers. She'd been stolen when she was a few months old and reunited with her family four years later. Many decades afterwards, I traced the photograph for research purposes. It was exactly as I remembered: a confused, little girl who'd believed she was an adored, only child until she was removed from the woman who stole her. Perhaps she’s the reason I’m fascinated by books about children reared under an assumed identity. Such books have offered me a glimpse into another world where such an act is committed and set against a fascinating, informative background.

Laura's book list on children living under assumed identities

Laura Elliot Why did Laura love this book?

As a writer, I'm intrigued by collaborations between authors. It must be an exhilarating experience to co-write a book, but are there also difficulties as the authors merge their different genres and styles into a seamless narrative?

This book had a theme that interested me, and I was keen to see how two minds could work in creative tandem. Did the authors develop different characters? Did they write alternating chapters? Did they disagree over elements of the plot? Curiosity as well as sheer enjoyment carried me through this colorful and nail-biting story about a stolen child and the earth-shattering effects it had on the lives of two very disparate women.

Alison Bass Author Of Rebecca of Ivanhoe

From my list on fiction novels that kept me glued to each page.

Why am I passionate about this?

I am a long-time journalist and have been passionate about understanding history ever since taking a wonderful AP course in European history in high school. I have read many historical books, both fiction and nonfiction, so it makes sense that my first novel, Rebecca of Ivanhoe, is historical fiction. To be a good journalist and citizen, you have to know and understand history to inform your reporting and try to prevent the bad moments of history from repeating themselves.

Alison's book list on fiction novels that kept me glued to each page

Alison Bass Why did Alison love this book?

This book has it all: humor, sparkling writing, a great cast of characters, and a fascinating dose of history (World War II history). In the book, we meet Archie and his spunky great-aunts, who are both in their 90s and enlisted in British women's service groups to help their country defeat the Germans.

As the story unfolds, weaving back and forth between the 1940s and the present,  we learn both women harbor secrets from their war years, and those secrets unfold over time, climaxing in a gripping ending during which Archie and his great-aunts are held hostage by terrorists during a jewelry auction in Paris. I couldn’t put this book down!
