Book cover of Seven Sisters

L.A. Larkin Author Of Next Girl Missing

From my list on suspense and mystery about women who fight back.

Why am I passionate about this?

My interest in gaslighting began when I watched the movie, Gaslight, starring Ingrid Bergman. Until then, I hadn’t understood how someone who appears charming and caring can use someone’s love to control, manipulate and undermine them, to such an extent that the victim doubts their own perception of reality. I started to read accounts of victims of gaslighting. I then realized that someone I knew was going through this. Fiction is a powerful means of creating awareness of issues and injustices, and I hope my new series character, Sally Fairburn, will inspire women to seize back their lives.

L.A.'s book list on suspense and mystery about women who fight back

L.A. Larkin Why did L.A. love this book?

The premise of the crime-thriller is fascinating: an all-female therapy group meets to share their pain at the abuse and murder of their sisters by their partners/husbands.

The justice system failed to prosecute the killers and the women pursue their own form of justice. They hatch a plan to kill the men who murdered their sisters. The author masterfully establishes how the female victims of abuse find themselves trapped and isolated by their abuser and why they find it so hard to leave them, even when their life is in danger.

The Nanny’s Secret is a fast paced drama about a wealthy, entitled family and their nannies who seem to disappear. The novel is full of secrets, with plenty of twists and a shocker of an ending. Rose, the protagonist is probably the only appealing individual in a cast of horrible characters in this atmospheric, gripping book.

Book cover of The Guest

Barbara Gayle Austin Author Of What You Made Me Do

From my list on domestic thrillers unraveling dark family secrets.

Why am I passionate about this?

I’ve read crime fiction since I was a kid, starting with Nancy Drew and the mystery magazines—Alfred Hitchcock, Mike Shayne, and Ellery Queen. While in elementary school, I wrote mystery short stories, which my sister illustrated, and we sold them on the street corner for 25 cents apiece. In the nineties, I devoured novels by Patricia Highsmith, Ruth Rendell, and P.D. James. The 2000s introduced another generation of favorite authors, including Belinda Bauer, Chris Whitaker, and Tana French. I love too many to name! My current passion is for novels that I can really sink my teeth into, with complex characters hiding dark secrets.

The twists at the end took me by surprise, though I sensed something wasn’t quite right throughout. I just couldn’t put my finger on what exactly. Iris and Gabriel return from a holiday and are surprised to find their friend Laure staying in their home.

What begins as an annoyance escalates to a threat as long-buried secrets start to surface. The tension kept me swiping the pages on my E-reader. It’s my favorite B. A. Paris thriller so far.

Book cover of A River of Crows

S.M. Stevens Author Of Beautiful and Terrible Things

From my list on amazing abilities of crows and ravens.

Why am I passionate about this?

I am fascinated by crows and ravens and their incredible abilities, including facial recognition and gift-giving. So I knew from the start that they would factor into my novel about a superstitious woman who interprets wild animal sightings as omens meant just for her (a habit I admit might be pulled from my own behavior…). For this list, I found five excellent novels that do more than give lip service (beak service?) to the noble creatures. Crows and ravens are integral to these plots. Not surprisingly, some present the birds as sinister and foreboding, others as prophetic and insightful. All, rightly so, acknowledge their intelligence.

S.M.'s book list on amazing abilities of crows and ravens

S.M. Stevens Why did S.M. love this book?

I loved that crows’ fascinating abilities are described in detail and woven into this mystery/thriller’s plot. Sloan’s mother is an ornithologist who studied crows and taught her children how the amazing birds form strong bonds, recognize faces, hold grudges, and mimic human voices.

When Sloan returns to her hometown as her mother is being released from a psychiatric facility and her father from prison, she repeatedly hears a crow calling Ridge, the name of her brother who went missing years before. This eerie echo of the past drives her to learn the truth about her brother’s disappearance, even as she is sucked back up into the childhood trauma that put her parents away. PTSD, double lives, and creeping insanity make this a riveting read, enriched by the crow imagery.

Now, twenty years later, Sloan's life is unraveling. In the middle of a bitter divorce, she's forced to return to her rural Texas hometown when her mother is discharged from a mental health facility.

Overwhelmed by memories and unanswered questions, Sloan returns to the last place her brother was seen…

This begins as very much a 'typical' (from my memory), Myron book. Myron's past rears its head. The mystery is intriguing. We go to Vegas on Win's private jet. Win is there to protect our favourite Sports/Entertainment rep. There is sass. There is violence. There is Myron thinking he's doing the right thing. Win is not so sure. (We also see Big Cindi and Esperanza). Oh, and Myron's mum and dad have discovered edibles in their 80s:)

But just as the reader is relaxing into this very familiar, very comforting scenario (revisiting much-loved literary characters is a real treat), last read 13 years ago, something happens. We hit 40% through the novel, and the storyline veers to something else. (I don't want to give any spoilers here.) At 60%, we get another huge veer. At 80%, you can't put the book down until you reach the end, which is breathless…

Joyce Carol Oates is genuinely an extraordinary author, known for her prolific output. While some writers focus on series, Oats dedicates her time to crafting numerous standalone books, each a gem in its own right.

The plot may appear simple at first glance—a missing sister, and a protagonist who must piece together the clues to find her. However, as the story unfolds, the reader becomes immersed in a web of subtle evidence that gradually weaves together, resulting in a rich and suspenseful novel. Put the book down.

Marlee Bush Author Of When She Was Me

From my list on books with untrustworthy sibling relationships.

Why am I passionate about this?

I have been absolutely entranced by complicated family dynamics and sibling relationships as long as I can remember. Particularly as they exist within the thriller space. I graduated with a degree in criminal justice which only fueled that fire as I learned so much more about psychology, the human mind, and the depths of human depravity. It was so natural for me to start exploring it in my own reading and writing.
