Valerie Biel ❤️ loved this book because...

I loved the dual time frames and the alternating points of view, but mainly--this book brought out all the feels. Beautiful, poignant, and real! I could not put it down, stayed up way too late, and cried eyes out. Serious book hangover, but it was worth it.

What is this book about?

A legendary band, an iconic lead singer, and their mysterious connection to a woman whose love helped create the music of a generation. Timing is everything in a powerful novel about fate, regret, and moving on by the author of A Day Like This.

In the 1990s, Carter Wills was the lead singer of the English alt-rock band Mayluna, securing his place among music legends. His tortured-heart lyrics struck a chord. And so did his secret connection to a woman whose love changed all their lives. Who was she?

My 2nd favorite read in 2024

Book cover of Beyond the Flames

Valerie Biel ❤️ loved this book because...

Suspenseful and heartfelt, Beyond the Flames is another page-turning story from this author who draws from his personal experiences as a first responder. That on-the-job experience makes his stories as authentic and real as they come. The novel has an excellent balance of personal storylines as his characters deal with the post-traumatic stress of their jobs embedded in an intensely satisfying plot, on par with the best crime-thrillers on the market. Great character development in a tightly-woven plot that leads to a satisfying conclusion with just the right amount of nerve-wracking scenes that keep you rooting for characters you’ve grown to love.

This stunning release will break you apart and remind you that we can all be put back together again, stronger and wiser than before. — Laurie Buchanan, author of the Sean McPherson crime thriller series.

"Two seasoned firefighters and a police captain try to save young girls from a dangerous gang. Behind the hard-boiled, tough-talking cop and firefighter stereotypes, there are numerous layers of complexities that touch on real psychological and social issues. Book cover of Courting the Sun: A Novel of Versailles

Valerie Biel ❤️ loved this book because...

This is a wonderful work of historical fiction—fast-paced and well plotted. Williams' skill in bringing the era to life makes this book a delight to read, transporting the reader to France during the reign of Louis XIV. The intrigue of court life is a mix of motivation, cross purposes, love, honor, seduction, and betrayal. Interwoven with the fictional story are the truths of history amplified by brilliantly created characters. A delightfully witty and smartly delicious read!

Book cover of Beyond the Cemetery Gate: The Secret Keeper's Daughter

What is my book about?

“This taut, suspenseful mystery goes beyond the cemetery gate and settles, creaking, into our very bones.” – Silvia Acevedo, author of the award-winning God Awful series.

When the police rule her dad’s death an accidental overdose, 16-year-old Chloe refuses to believe it and vows to find his killer. Alone against a potentially corrupt, small-town police force, a persistent social worker seeking proof that she has adult supervision, and precariously low funds, Chloe learns that her dad’s life as a cemetery caretaker masked a web of family secrets that quite possibly led to his death—and are now putting her in mortal danger.

Needing freedom to investigate, Chloe pretends that her only surviving relative, a famous war correspondent, has returned from an overseas assignment to be her guardian. But living alone in the caretaker’s house in the middle of the cemetery, mere feet from the crime scene, puts Chloe’s nerves on edge even before she unearths clues about the shadowy side of her small town. Help comes from unlikely and surprising allies: the colorful owner of the local retro diner, the quiet new classmate with his near-perfect memory, and a spirit who visits in her moments of greatest need.

But as Chloe gets closer to the truth, someone else is getting closer to Chloe, watching her every move. And when her aunt turns up on international news reporting from a war zone, Chloe’s cover is blown. Now the race is on to reveal her dad’s killer—but perhaps—Chloe isn’t as alone as she thought.
