Reddit LitRPG most recommended reads

Set in a Western setting and with a system, it’d be easy to wonder why this book is on this list, but don’t be fooled by its appearances; this story has all the basics of cultivation inside it; it’s simply hidden at first.

This book takes place in a subgenre of books that are commonly referred to as System Apocalypses or LitRPG Apocalypses, where a system arrives on Earth, giving people gamified abilities and bringing monsters that cause an apocalypse to happen.

This one, though, takes place in what is effectively a broad cultivation multiverse and expands what the genre tends to be and can be while also effectively delivering on the core premises of what makes cultivation stories so exciting: the power system. It’s one of the most recommended books in this space, and for good reason. 

I love this story because it’s everything both a time-loop and a superhero story should be. It’s got fascinating powers that are both complex and internally consistent; I always go, “Oh, that makes sense.” When things are explained further, it always makes sense, and that also means that everything has a weakness. And the characters are just so much fun; I absolutely adore them.

There's all kinds and even the silly ones are never one-note jokes, they’re just being themselves and they just feel so real. I read this three-book series in less than a week, probably at the cost of getting some of my own writing done, because it’s just so damn good. 

This LitRPG series by Matt Dinniman is not my usual fare. It is far more adult (not sex, but lots of gore and language) and has higher stakes than I usually read, so readers should be aware that it is an adult series and not appropriate for young adults.

But it is SOOOOO freaking good. I’m usually not gripped by LitRPG stories because the world they are fighting in is fake (virtual, only exists in make-believe, etc.). But this story turns it on its head because the entire Earth becomes a massive role-playing arena. It is sort of Hunger Games meets Ready Player One meets Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.

 It is ridiculous and gripping and funny. There are cheers and tears. And in the end, they are all fighting to take back Earth. It is very well-plotted, well-paced, and just a good time.

The Gentleman Bastards are a fun, exciting group with a connection that feels genuine throughout the story and has, by far, some of the best and most hilarious dialogue I've ever read in a book. I've also learned quite a bit about fantasy storytelling from this story, in that you can craft a compelling fantasy story without huge, world-changing stacks by making the characters emotionally motivated in their goal.

The mystery was also a pleasant surprise, as it incorporated clever clues and plot points that came together nicely for a satisfying conclusion. Actions and choices actually weighed in on the events.

This is the biggest, most overwhelmingly awesome fantasy story I’ve ever read, bar none. I started reading it and kept doing so non-stop for probably well over a month. It’s so good that I basically did nothing except read, go to class, and do the usual self-care.

It’s a story about a thousand people from Earth scattered across a vast fantasy world, and you really get to see every nook and cranny of this world across the series. Because this is an ancient world, every nook and cranny actually has something fascinating to find. I just absolutely love this story. 

This book introduces a very good series and was responsible for encouraging my love of science fantasy – some of which I write. While I have tried to keep away from more famous authors, this one got through because it really is that good.

As with all good science fantasy, it has various levels, some of the deepest making one think, or you can just go with the flow and enjoy the yarn. That is something I also strive to do with readers, well, I try to.
