The most recommended books about Lucifer

Season of Mists is my favorite of Gaiman’s graphic novels from his stellar Sandman run. Death, Dream’s older sister, appears at the end of the first arc and proved to be a fan favorite from that first on-page appearance. She’s a lovely, sweet, and utterly kind incarnation of the boundary that severs this life from whatever comes after. Gaiman creating a comforting presence out of an idea that terrifies most people. She’s charming in this installment, forcing her brother to face his misdeeds with compassion and honesty. It’s no wonder she is one of the only people in his family that Dream listens to!

I’m a huge fantasy reader and don’t normally pick up something like this but the back of the book intrigued me. I’m so glad I read this one and that is why it made my list.

You guessed it. It’s about Adam and Eve but nothing like what you read in The Bible. This is a fantastical telling of an epic tale. Give it a shot. You won’t be disappointed.

Okay, this one’s cheating a little – these are contemporary comic book witches. But it’s my list, so I’m including it.

Harris has created a super fun story featuring the empath Topaz, sorceress Jennifer Kale, and succubus Satana Hellstrom (with bonus Johnny Blaze aka the Ghost Rider).

Each of these women is kickass in their own right, but when they combine their powers – Topaz’s divine in nature, Satana’s demonic, and Jennifer’s good old-fashioned witchcraft – they become a force that can face down Lucifer himself.

And if the magic doesn’t take him down, the snark surely will!

This one is classed as YA, and might actually fall under Fantasy but with a difference. The protagonist is the antichrist, normally the stuff of Horror, but he's in high school and trying to fit in as best he can and gather friends rather than followers. What could go wrong?

Well, falling in love with a girl with religious parents might be an error in judgment and the local Satanist groups trying to enlist him doesn't help. It's a story of a teenager at the heart of it, albeit one with special powers and demons harassing him, but it's a fun read and has some great humour when it comes to dealing with bullies or misguided young Satanists trying to sacrifice a duck. Trust me, the duck is okay.

One of the most masterfully-wrought novels I’ve had the pleasure to read.

Here we follow a bitter, veteran knight, Thomas, wounded at the Battle of Crecy and divested of his landholdings, as he leaves behind a life of brigandage in order to deliver a young oddball girl to Avignon.

All the while France descends into chaos, not just because of the bubonic plague, but because the forces of heaven and hell are locked in a battle for the fate of humankind. Freighted with pathos and lyrical in its allegory, this is a novel that will both inspire and terrify you.

“Is Father good because He is good, or because He says He is good?” Angels Before Man is a gorgeous queer retelling of the fall of Lucifer.

God creates Lucifer to be the most beautiful and loved of all angels. Lucifer struggles in this role until the strongest of angels, Michael, comes into his life and teaches him to love himself. Why should Lucifer not revel in his own beauty and talents, for is it not what he was created for? But Lucifer soon learns his God is a jealous one and does not like to be questioned.

This is a beautifully tragic novel, and Nicolás interweaves religious trauma with a forbidden love story. I couldn’t put it down and was left thinking about it for days after I finished it.

A happy ever after is nice ‘n all, but sometimes I want angst and torture blocking the path of true love. The Children of The Morning Star series delivers that, plus more. Pavlik has crafted a complex, layered world, woven with religious dogma, which I could have taken at face value, but once I dwelt on the motives, beliefs, and loyalties of the characters (both good and bad) it left me contemplating the age-old battle between good and evil until the wee small hours. Lucifer’s vampires, created to aid the war effort between heaven and hell, strike a deal with God, and with this metaphorical handshake, chaos is unleashed. Way beyond the usual vampire trope, for me, this series has a whiff of the classical rising from its pages. 

Imagine being able to see the war in heaven and Lucifer's fall. This was another book that got my attention because of its seemingly risky nature. I loved how this book made Lucifer feel real, far more real than some vaguely evil entity. It helped me understand he is a real and malicious supernatural person.

Making him feel real made his hatred of mankind and the reasoning behind it feel real as well. I loved how this book explained the sequencing of DNA, the blueprint of humanity, and how it was based on God. All of that, mixed with the looming Apocalypse, made this a deeply engaging story.

Although this book is only a few years old, it should be considered a classic in the genre of evil houses. A young woman inherits her mother’s childhood home and decides to convert it into a hotel. Only the place comes with some surprises: ghosts, demons, and an ancient evil that has been locked away in the dark basement. Now that evil is loose again, and the bloodshed and death are just beginning. Author Chantal Noordeloos doesn’t hold back with the frights or the blood, as person after person suffers a horrible death while poor Freya discovers her true destiny is not what she planned, and that the place they call Lucifer Falls might never let her go.
