For as long as I can remember I’ve been obsessed with figuring out how things work. What started with me pulling apart redundant household tech as a child (thanks to my very supportive parents) has become a lifelong passion in making and restoring one of the most incredible machines invented – the watch. Our millennia-old obsession with making things tells us so much about who we are and the world we like in. I love all of these books as, in varied ways, they inspire curiosity and connect us with our innately human instinct to understand the world around us.

My husband sums up my biography as “I am, therefore I dig.” I live, garden, read and write in Chatham, New Jersey, and have had a long, open love affair with the gardening style “across the pond.” At the New York Botanical Garden I teach English garden history, and I’m a regular contributor to the British gardening journal, Hortus. In my writing, I follow the relationship between the pen and the trowel, that is authors and their gardens. I’ve written books about children’s authors Beatrix Potter and Frances Hodgson Burnett, and, as you might imagine, the research trips to the UK were a special bonus.

I’m somebody that starts far too many sentences with the phrase “Remember when.” I have great sensory recollection of things from my past. As a high schooler in the 90s, I can still smell the CK One I was wearing during the Seinfeld finale and hear the Nirvana blaring through my 5-disc changer while I did my homework. I love using my writing to bring certain time periods back to life. I think because technology is moving so quickly – I struggle to understand TikTok – I like writing books and reading books that take me back to a time period that isn’t changing with status updates, new pictures, and Snaps every second.
Tearjerker warning here. This book brought me back to 1930s Atlantic City. As a Jersey Girl, I’m always curious to read books about the place I grew up. I was especially interested in this book because it centered on a Jewish family, similar to my own. While the plot hinges on a tragedy, there are also hopeful moments and some well-placed humor. Not only was I wrapped up in the family drama, but I learned so much history about the Jersey Shore, a place that today barely resembles what author Rachel Beanland describes.

Who knew that an entire book about a piece of embroidery could be so fascinating.
I stayed in a small hotel in Bayeux pre-pandemic and, on a whim, strolled over to the small museum that holds this 1000-year-old, massive, 200-foot-long tapestry telling the story of the Norman Conquest. I saw for myself the intricate embroidery, the artistic flair, the comic details, and the horror of war, spread out like one of today's graphic novels. When I heard about this book on CBC radio, I had to get myself a copy. I'm so glad I did.

the same twelve months. For me to choose anything over ancient poetry is almost unheard of.
But I think the state of socio-politics right now has played
a hand in influencing me—we can see what fanaticism is doing to the
world everywhere we look, and Rushdie’s The Satanic Verses not only shreds the
notions of religious and political fanaticism but does so with great humanity
and intellectual savagery.

never heard of The Book of Ebenezer Le Page until my agent, Victoria,
recommended it recently, and I fell under its precious spell.
It purports to be
the autobiography of Ebenezer, a now elderly, cranky eccentric on the island of
Guernsey in the Channel Islands. Any momentum to the narrative given by the
chronology of Ebenezer's life – from the late nineteenth century to the 1960s -
is undermined by our narrator's endless digressions, asides, and opinions.
Instead,
you enter the novel as if stepping through a door into a different realm of
existence. Ebenezer tells us of his various relations and their resentments and
squabbles, the great thwarted love of his life, Liza Queripel, his work fishing
and gardening, and his deep friendships. I adored his company.
As
William Golding aptly put it, "To read it is not like reading, but living."
