Book cover of Goodnight, Goodnight, Construction Site

Megan Preston Meyer Author Of Supply Jane & Fifo Fix the Flow: A Supply Chain and Logistics Adventure for Kids

From my list on Kidsā€™ books about supply chain management and other ways the world works.

Why am I passionate about this?

I spent 10+ years in supply chain and analytics, but now I tell the stories that data doesnā€™t. I love exposing the hidden logic that makes the world work. Correction: I love discovering the hidden logic that makes the world work, and what I figure out, I love to share. Whether itā€™s getting kids interested in supply chain (e.g., how the things in the Amazon package actually get to their mailbox) or shedding light on corporate absurdity in funny novels (e.g., Firebrand), I figure that the more we can pull back the curtain and look behind the scenes, the more we can understandā€”and appreciateā€”the world around us.

Sometimes, things that are mainstream-popular are mainstream-popular for a reason. Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site may be the Starbucks of big-truck-oriented kidlit, but every once in a while, you just want a nice, reliable $7 latte instead of a matcha-oat-single-origin-barista-art-cortado out of a chipped vintage teacup.

And, sometimes, your kids want the same book they read at daycare with their friends instead of one of Mom or Dadā€™s gold or silver nostalgia trips. Luckily, GGCS lives up to its best-selling reputation: it rhymes, the illustrations are pretty, and the dump truck is a girl. It just goes to show that, sometimes, a book doesnā€™t have to be old to be a classic.

Book cover of My Thomas Potty Book (Thomas & Friends)

Christie Griffin Authier Author Of The Poopy Pants Dance

From my list on childrenā€™s stories about going potty.

Why am I passionate about this?

It doesnā€™t matter that Iā€™m a former journalist who has also most recently worked at Sesame Workshop (yes, that Elmo!) and Mattel (Fisher-Price, Barbie, Thomas & Friends, etc). When my kiddo shouts, ā€œMommy! I need a bum bum wipe!ā€ my duty is to get to that doodie ASAP. Ah, parenthood...is there anything more humbling? Someday, my kids might think itā€™s cool that I wrote for old-school magazines (!) and interviewed celebrities (!!) and lived in NYC for 15 years (!!!). But for now, Iā€™m proud I get to read my silly little childrenā€™s book to them any time they ask. Or any book for that matter because books are magic!

Christie's book list on childrenā€™s stories about going potty

Christie Griffin Authier Why did Christie love this book?

I used to write social-first content for the parent audience of Thomas & Friends, which meant I had to find ways to connect with parents on a relatable level while also using Thomas media. This book squarely hits that mark, and ā€œtrain momsā€ will undoubtedly appreciate a little help from Thomas when itā€™s time to start potty training. In this book, kids are asked to make decisions like which color undies they would like, and they will love the 30 reward stickers that are included. Thanks to this book, ā€œPeep! Peep!ā€ can lead to ā€œPoop! Poop!ā€

Book cover of The Little Engine That Could

Ari Gunzburg Author Of Someday Soon

From my list on to inspire hope.

Why am I passionate about this?

I continue to find hope as a constant theme in my talks and my various media appearances. Hope is so integral to being able to fight for another day. When we can plant the seed of hope and perseverance in kids from a young age, by giving the gift of books that show them the true meaning of hope and aspirations, we give them a gift that carries them well through life.

Ari's book list on to inspire hope

Ari Gunzburg Why did Ari love this book?

This book was originally published in 1930 and also goes back a long way in my own life as well. I have fond memories of my father reading this story to me when I was young, acting out all the parts of the story, using different voices, and more. Despite being little and unassuming, the Little Blue Engine uses hope and belief to get over the mountain. Without belief in ourselves we often canā€™t even begin to try, but the Little Blue Engine chose to trust in himself and it paid off - big time. We can all use a little more belief in our own abilities to create massive change in our lives.

With colorful pictures of a number of vehicles (including some unexpected entries like ā€œsubmarineā€ and ā€œhot air balloon") and descriptions of the sound they make, my kid is absolutely delighted by this simple but eye-catching board book.

I admit, I may elaborate on some of the sounds (why should a submarine go ā€œblub blubā€ when you can say ā€œDive! Dive! Awwoooogaā€), but sometimes a book is just a canvas for you to get creative.

Book cover of Thomas the Tank Engine's Hidden Surprises

Jack Payton Author Of Billy Balloon

From my list on childrenā€™s stories you wish you had written.

Why am I passionate about this?

I wrote Billy Balloon in fourth grade for a writing exercise. I remember the teacher reading it to the whole class. I was filled with pride. Then through the years Iā€™d revisit the story and think about getting it published. Many years later, with the support and encouragement from my family, I finally decided to go through with it. We then went from wanting to publish one book to building a brand similar to Curious George and Thomas the Train. We had such a great experience and fun time we also decided to share the adventure with others. We invite readers to submit ideas for other books in the Billy Balloon series through our website

Jack's book list on childrenā€™s stories you wish you had written

Jack Payton Why did Jack love this book?

This is another impressive and prolific book series.

The magic here is how trains on set tracks on an island can have such big and diverse personalities. Thomas was the little engine trying to do big things.

In a way he is like a little kid growing up and exploring their independence. He tries to show he can do things the bigger trains (or kids) can.

My kids and I had a great time growing up alongside Thomas. My son always carried a small Thomas toy in his pocket.

I would notice he would pat his pocket whenever he needed extra encouragement, for example, at the park among the bigger kids.
