My favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of The Golden Enclaves

Dan Moren Why did I love this book?

Capping off her tremendous Scholomance series, Naomi Novik departs from the winning formula of the first two volumes—which each follow a year in the life of teenage students at a deadly school for magic—and expands the universe into something much, much bigger.

Not only is this book a cracking read, but Novik throws in a curveball that will make you rethink everything you believe from the first two books. It’s one of the most gripping series finales I’ve ever read, at turns funny and drama-laden but confident in its storytelling throughout.

If nothing else, I guarantee that it’s the only series you’ll ever read about a relatable teenage sorceress named Galadriel, destined to wreak destruction on the world.

By Naomi Novik,

Why should I read it?

What is this book about?

#1 NATIONAL BESTSELLER • Saving the world is a test no school of magic can prepare you for in the triumphant conclusion to the New York Times bestselling trilogy that began with A Deadly Education and The Last Graduate.

ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: Paste, Publishers Weekly

The one thing you never talk about while you’re in the Scholomance is what you’ll do when you get out. Not even the richest enclaver would tempt fate that way. But it’s all we dream about: the hideously slim chance we’ll survive to make it out the gates and improbably…

My 2nd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of The Dog Sitter Detective

Dan Moren Why did I love this book?

I grew up reading classic mysteries—Arthur Conan Doyle, Agatha Christie, Dorothy Sayers, and way more—so I love a good amateur detective thrown into the midst of a case, working it in their own inimitable style.

Antony Johnston's Dogsitter Detective (soon to be followed by a second volume) absolutely nails this conceit while updating it to the modern era. Aging actress Gwinny Tuffel not only finds herself embroiled in a murder at her friend's country house wedding but has to solve it with a pair of dogs in tow!

It's charming, it's fun, and don't worry: nothing bad happens to the dogs.

What is this book about?

Meet Gwinny, an unlikely bloodhound, and her four-legged friends determined to dig up the truth.

Penniless Gwinny Tuffel is delighted to attend her good friend Tina's upmarket wedding. But when the big day ends with a dead body and not a happily-ever-after, Gwinny is left with a situation as crooked as a dog's hind leg.

When her friend is accused of murder, Gwinny takes it upon herself to sniff out the true culprit. With a collection of larger-than-life suspects and two pedigree Salukis in tow, she is set to have a ruff time of it.

My 3rd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of Fortune Favours the Dead

Dan Moren Why did I love this book?

I’ve already confessed my love for mysteries, and about the only thing I like better is period mysteries. Willowjean Parker, the former circus performer, finds herself working as the partner to famous detective Lillian Pentecost in 1940s New York.

The two take on the case of a rich widow found dead after her fancy Halloween party—in the same place her husband took his own life a year earlier. Vengeful spirits, or something more…human?

Stephen Spotswood captures the feel of the era, from the newshounds to the society pages and crafts compelling characters that you’ll want to keep coming back to—trust me, I’ve read both sequels and am avidly anticipating the third!

After a botched case resulted in the death of Mike Lucifer’s partner, the spiritual consultant fled his hometown of Boston, opting for a life of luxury and booze—but mostly booze—on the sandy beaches of Hawaii.

Now, two years later, he’s back in town, investigating what looks like a routine demon possession. But when Mike uncovers a scandal at a tech company that dabbles in the dark arts, what he thought was a cut-and-dry case turns out to be frightfully more.

Book cover of Jane Foster's Things That Go

Dan Moren Why did they love this book?

With colorful pictures of a number of vehicles (including some unexpected entries like “submarine” and “hot air balloon") and descriptions of the sound they make, my kid is absolutely delighted by this simple but eye-catching board book.

I admit, I may elaborate on some of the sounds (why should a submarine go “blub blub” when you can say “Dive! Dive! Awwooooga”), but sometimes a book is just a canvas for you to get creative.

By Jane Foster,

Why should I read it?

What is this book about?

Introduce little ones to their favorite things that go in this bold and graphic board book by illustrator and textile designer Jane Foster.

In this beautiful and sophisticated board book, children will be introduced to bold images of things that go, such as beeping buses, zooming rockets, and more!

Praise for Jane Foster's ABC and Jane Foster's 123:

"Both titles are stunningly simple, but Foster is able to create some truly arresting images here, making both books pleasurable repeat reads. A fetching and effective introduction to the world of numbers." -starred review, Kirkus Reviews

Book cover of That's not my puppy...: Its Coat is Too Hairy

Dan Moren Why did they love this book?

Look, the plot is thin: a mouse needs to find its puppy and has to dismiss several wrong dogs before finding the right one.

But each dog has a fun tactile experience (a fluffy tail, bumpy paws, a squashy nose), and the pictures are big and colorful. It was one of the first books my kid could recognize by name, and we’re still reading it months later.

By Fiona Watt, Rachel Wells (illustrator),

Why should I read it?

1 author picked That's not my puppy... as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

A touchy-feely board book with simple, repetitive text, tactile patches and bold illustrations suitable for babies and toddlers. A little white mouse appears on every page, for children to spot.

My 1-year-old's 3rd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of Kitten's First Full Moon

Dan Moren Why did they love this book?

A beautiful black-and-white illustrated board book follows a poor cat who wants to drink a bowl of milk—the only problem is that the “bowl” is the moon. Poor kitten.

My kid was entranced by the pictures and the cat’s mishaps, and it’s clever enough that it doesn’t drag on repeated readings. (And yes, you will repeat readings. A lot.)

By Kevin Henkes,

Why should I read it?

1 author picked Kitten's First Full Moon as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it. This book is for kids age 4, 5, 6, and 7.

What is this book about?

It is Kitten's first full moon, and when she sees it she thinks it is a bowl of milk in the sky. And she wants it. Does she get it? Well, no... and yes. What a night! This brave young kitten sets out into the world on a quest that leaves her bruised, bewildered and hungry, but that ultimately leads her back home, where something special is waiting just for her, in a story that is by turns hilarious and heartwarming. With stunning black-and-white artwork, a simple text and an adorable kitten character, this picture book has all the makings…
