Mary S. Schaeffer Author Of 127 Best Practices for Accounts Payable

From my list on to build excellence in accounting and finance.

Why am I passionate about this?

Iā€™m obsessed with spreading the word about best practices when it comes to the accounts payable function. Itā€™s a lot more complicated than you might imagine ā€“ if you want to avoid fraud, excess costs, duplicate payments, problems with the IRS, etc. I regularly speak at both online and live events. As the host of the AP Now YouTube channel, Iā€™m able to share opinions, interview industry thought leaders, and share the latest business intelligence needed to run an efficient, cost-effective accounts payable and payment function. Iā€™ve written over 20 business books, most of them focusing on various aspects of the accounts payable function.

Did you know that women excel when it comes to embezzlement?

Itā€™s the one type of fraud that is more likely to be committed by a woman than a man. Thatā€™s why embezzlement is often referred to as pink-collar crime. But, as Paxton points out, the crime has more to do with position rather than gender as most embezzlement is committed by lower-level employees, such as the bookkeeper who runs the accounting and finance side of an office.

This is especially true in smaller businesses. Packed with numerous real-life stories, Paxton shares tips every organization should use to ensure this type of crime does not happen on their watch. She also is known for creating fraud-related hashtags, my favorite being #trustisnotaninternalcontrol.

Fraud continues to plague the business community and learning out to deal with it is crucial, especially when it comes to putting a fraud protection framework in place.

Too often, organizations focus heavily on stopping small petty frauds, while leaving the door wide open for some of the more virulent frauds that can literally bring an organization to its knees. Think Enron, Worldcom, etc. Hartman worked on both and shares insights learned from these and other white-collar crimes he investigated while working for the FBI.

David's book list on making you a better artist

David Chelsea Why did David love this book?

I owe Francis D.K. Ching big time. What I learned about perspective in art school served me well enough during my first few years as a working illustrator, but there came a time when I faced a perspective problem beyond my experience on deadline, and I needed to pick up new skills fast. I knew the neighbor in the next apartment over was a graphic designer, so I knocked on her door to ask if she had any books on perspective, and this is what she had on the shelf. The perspective section is only a small part of this elegantly drawn and hand-lettered book, but the information in it was enough to solve my immediate problem and set me to exploring perspective on my own (and some thirty years later, I found my neighbor again on LinkedIn and returned her copy).

Melanie Deziel

From my list on how writers can avoid being replaced by AI.

Why am I passionate about this?

Professionally, Iā€™ve been a journalist, author, speaker, marketer, adjunct professor, consultant, startup founder, and more; but at my core, Iā€™m a storyteller and a lifelong student. I read voraciously about creativity, writing, media, marketing, psychology, and design, and Iā€™m fascinated by drawing connections between these things. (Iā€™m still allowed to say ā€œreadā€ when I mostly consume audiobooks, right?) Iā€™m currently focused on helping other creators and storytellers master their craft, refine their big ideas, and figure out their unique differentiators, through The Creator Kitchen, the mastermind program I run with fellow creator Jay Acunzo.
