This book is indeed a “creation of comic genius,” as Nick Hornby blurbed. The movie didn’t do anything for me; I found Renée Zellweger quite blah, and Hugh Grant was playing the British cad as usual. However, the book was so funny I had a hard time putting it down.
Basically, it is about Bridget, a British “Everywoman” who falls into the clutches of her slimy boss, Daniel, while on a quest for the traditional Holy Grail of womanhood—true love. One of the things I most enjoyed about this chick-lit classic was the rather graphic booze-and-smoking sessions, as well as the eccentric minor characters, especially Bridget’s mother. My mother is also a maverick and very much a free spirit, so this really resonated with me.

I bought this book on a whim, as a second-hand book, with proceeds going to help stray animals in China. I was delighted to discover it was an autographed copy and that the book was originally a PhD thesis.

This book follows a will-they-won’t-they trajectory and struck a deep chord with me because it shows how one serendipitous encounter can change your life forever and how relationships of all nature are dynamic, subject to ebb and flow. The differences in character between the protagonists—bookish, no-nonsense Emma and the laissez-faire playboy Dexter—also added to the dramatic and romantic tension.

Stylistically, Erich Segal is my idol because he has a distinct, crisp, clean writing style that he could leverage for dramatic effect. I was intrigued by the fact that he was a classicist by profession; I myself minored in Latin and Greek at the university.
Segal wrote successfully not only for scholarly readers but also for the general public, which is not an easy feat. Segal claimed that Love Story ruined his academic career, but this is actually the book people remember him for today. As a young woman, I enjoyed his novel Love Story, but as a middle-aged woman, I prefer Man, Woman, and Child because it is more nuanced and deals with post-marital responsibilities and challenges that a couple must navigate together if they want their marriage to survive.

I find it fascinating on so many levels, which is why I not only have a ton of it but also made it my career. Sexuality, desire, and arousal are so complex and individual, and I feel like this book explored so much. It really “went there.” Through reading these fictional stories, I felt empowered to do more sexually and push the boundaries of what sex can mean to me.

Prior to writing my own works of fiction, I actually worked for several years as a romance ghostwriter. I’ve worked for many clients under various pseudonyms, and many of these titles have gone on to the Amazon Top 100 list (I just can’t tell you which one because I signed an NDA).
