Ness Brown Author Of The Scourge Between Stars

From my list on sci-fi about space missions gone terribly wrong.

Why am I passionate about this?

I am an astrophysicist with a passion for narratives that stare unflinchingly at the inherent hostility of outer space. Professionally, I study graduate astrophysics and research the ways high-energy celestial objects impact cosmic evolution. Creatively, I use my training to write science fiction horror exploring the spookiest things the universe has to offer. I particularly love stories that throw wrenches in the best-laid plans of star-faring protagonists, and will never get tired of a good old space mission gone terribly and tragically awry.

Ness' book list on sci-fi about space missions gone terribly wrong

Ness Brown Why did Ness love this book?

Binti combines some of my favorite flavors of science fiction into one bittersweet treat: brutal interspecies politics, cultural misunderstandings, and the struggle for coexistence in a galactic community.

The tragic encounter between students on their way to attend a prestigious university on another world and a violent alien species starts this story off with heart-pounding, heart-rending stakes. It goes on to interrogate war and peace between species and the act of true communication and tolerance.

Those who are interested in stories with a raw but hopeful outlook on what it would mean for multiple civilizations in the Milky Way to find harmony will enjoy this read.

Her name is Binti, and she is the first of the Himba people ever to be offered a place at Oomza University, the finest institution of higher learning in the galaxy. But to accept the offer will mean giving up her place in her family to travel between the stars among strangers who do not share her ways or respect her customs.

Knowledge comes at a cost, one that Binti is willing to pay, but her journey will not be easy. The world she seeks to enter has long warred with the Meduse, an alien race that has become theā€¦

Carolyn Watson Dubisch Author Of After The Robots Died: Rey Rabbits Issue #1

From my list on science fiction and comics for young adults.

Why am I passionate about this?

For my whole life I've been fascinated by science fiction. I love watching Star Trek and reading books by Octavia Butler, and probably my favorite moment in school was when we were asked to read The Veldt by Ray Bradbury. As an artist I designed aliens for Star Wars products and am listed in the ā€œWookiepediaā€ online. My latest childrenā€™s book Alien Farm; Scary Stories for kids just won ā€œBest Paranormal Book for kidsā€ in the Firebird Awards. I also teach art to kids here in Mexico and I see their eyes light up when the assignment is to create robot designs or to draw spaceships and aliens.

Carolyn Watson Dubisch Why did Carolyn love this book?

This is the first issue of an excellent YA comic book series. I really do enjoy scifi that features apes or any kind of simian life (yes, I love the Planet of the Apes series), so this book got my attention with the cover. The main characters are all space monkeys or simian astronauts that have landed their spacecraft on an alien world. One unfortunate monkey is the chosen explorer while the others watch his progress from the relative safety of the spaceship. The story is tense and surprising. The art is very skilled and I truly look forward to the next issue of the series which is expected to be released soon.

The first book of a middle grade series, this book will leave you reeling. The Munchkins are 13 children with special powers like healing and making objects appear and for some reason they donā€™t age after they turn ten. Narrated by Capricorn Munch, one of the 13, they donā€™t seem to remember much of their own history but they now live with their adoptive father, when a very sinister neighbor moves in and upends their lives in more ways than they could imagine.

A tightly woven story that will take the reader on an intense journey. This multi-award-winning book is perfect for fans of The Umbrella Academy or Harry Potter.

This graphic novel which was first serialized on the platform Webtoons, takes place in the near future. People are able to alter their physical appearance using new technology. Book cover of Spear

David Mack Author Of Star Trek: Picard: Firewall

From my list on science fiction and fantasy books with a heroic female coming-of-age story.

Why am I passionate about this?

Iā€™ve always been an avid reader, ever since I was old enough to hold a book upright. Today, Iā€™m a writer of science fiction, fantasy, and thrillers, with credits spanning novels, short fiction, television, comic books, and video games. Iā€™m especially fond of heroic tales that feature female main characters, both in books and on-screen. Several of my nearly 40 novels have featured heroic female main characters, including my newest book, Star Trek: Picard: Firewall, which is a coming-of-age tale about Seven of Nineā€™s journey to becoming a Fenris Ranger.

David's book list on science fiction and fantasy books with a heroic female coming-of-age story

David Mack Why did David love this book?

Ever since I was a boy, Iā€™ve loved stories of the Arthurian mythos. Camelot, the Round Table, the Grail Quest, I couldnā€™t get enough of it. I also love seeing classic stories gender-flipped to reveal new perspectives on the original narrative.

This novel, which reimagines the Grail Quest by making Percival a woman named Peretur, also infuses the classic myths with Welsh and Celtic lore, the effects of Roman colonization, and insightful explorations of queerness and disability in a fantasy setting, all delivered in truly beautiful prose.

This is a book that helped me see some of my favorite tales in a new and more enlightened way.

Book cover of Alanna

E. M. Leander Author Of Wren and the Tarnished Tiger

From my list on epic fantasy with adventure and romance.

Why am I passionate about this?

Iā€™ve been in love with reading fantasy since I first learned how to read, and Iā€™ve been writing stories almost as long. As an adult, writing has become my hobby, my passion, my creative outlet, and my escape. Fantasy provides what no other genre does ā€“ to quote G. K. Chesterton, ā€œFairy tales are more than true; not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten.ā€ I hope you enjoy all of the books on this list ā€“ they are full of adventure, romance, and, most importantly, magic.

E. M.'s book list on epic fantasy with adventure and romance

E. M. Leander Why did E. M. love this book?

One of my all-time favorite fantasy novels, and the one that got me hooked on fantasy as a girl ā€“ Alanna is the ultimate scrappy heroine and I dreamed of being her when I was growing up.

Alanna has a black cat companion, which may or may not have influenced me to adopt a black cat as an adult.

At the time I read it, Iā€™d never heard of a woman wanting to be a knight before ā€“ Alanna helped me realize that all glass ceilings can be shattered, and this remains one of the most re-read novels on my shelf.

Lindsay A. Franklin Author Of The Story Peddler

From my list on YA Christian fantasy to unlock your imagination.

Why am I passionate about this?

Iā€™m Lindsay, and I never stop falling in love with human creativity. From the moment I first cracked open a library-borrowed copy of The Wizard of Oz as a child, Iā€™ve been asking ā€œWhat ifā€¦?ā€ and Iā€™ve delighted in how other authors imaginatively tackle that question. My interests are eclectic, ranging from history and politics to baking and sparkly things. I read to be swept away and to take a peek inside the storytellerā€™s mind and heart.

Lindsay's book list on YA Christian fantasy to unlock your imagination

Lindsay A. Franklin Why did Lindsay love this book?

The quintessential YA Christian fantasy story in my opinion! Jill hits every fantasy beat perfectly, and I particularly loved the obvious care she put into the details. The result is a world that feels ripped from the pages of history, yet itā€™s overlaid with spiritual themes, supernatural happenings (bloodvoicing, anyone?), and allusions to Christ that will resonate for followers of Jesus. When I want a story that has overt and uplifting Christian themes, I reach for this series.

Book cover of Pagan's Crusade

Wendy Orr Author Of Cuckoo's Flight

From my list on to bring history to life.

Why am I passionate about this?

Iā€™ve always been fascinated by history, and when I dreamed of being an author, imagined Iā€™d write historical fiction. However, it took many writing detours to arrive there. (Nimā€™s Island, by the way, has no basis in historical fact!). When I first imagined the story that led to the Minoan Wings trilogy, I fell in love with researching this era, which is particularly intriguing because there are virtually no written records. Visiting the ruins of a four-thousand-year-old town on Crete under the guidance of an archaeologist who had not only excavated there but had become passionately involved with my imaginary characters, was an absolute highlight of my life.

Wendy's book list on to bring history to life

Wendy Orr Why did Wendy love this book?

I fell in love with the irrepressible Pagan as soon as I read this book. Itā€™s difficult to imagine that life with the Knights Templar at the time of the Crusades was highly amusing ā€“ but despite the wealth of knowledge and detail that informs this book, it is wry and sometimes laugh-out-loud funny. Who wouldnā€™t love Paganā€™s favorite curse: "Christ in a cream cheese sauceā€™?"

Book cover of The Greatest Knight

Gina Detwiler Author Of The Hammer of God

From my list on the Middle Ages with medieval warrior heroes.

Why am I passionate about this?

My passion for the Middle Ages began with castles. I lived in Germany for a time, where there are a lot of castles, and I got sucked into the whole romantic notion of living a castle life, though Iā€™d probably have been more of a scullery maid than a princess. When I decided to try writing a novel, I figured castles had to be involved somehow. I started doing research on medieval subjects that would make a good book. Unfortunately, the time period I ended up choosing for my novel was the early 8th centuryā€”no castles. I spent over twenty years researching and writing my novel, so I hope I learned something.

Gina's book list on the Middle Ages with medieval warrior heroes

Gina Detwiler Why did Gina love this book?

If I had to pick a perfect writer, Chadwick would be it. Her prose, her dialogue, her historical detail, and her characters are all pitch-perfectā€”itā€™s like she was reborn from the Middle Ages and is just reporting what she saw. This book is the first in a series about William Marshall, and if you donā€™t know who he is, you need to. Not only was he the greatest tournament champion ever, but an all-around exemplary soldier and statesman who saved the English crown at least a dozen times. Best of all, he lived during the most intriguing time of English history, the reign of Henry II, when the indomitable Eleanor was queen, and their four sons, Henry, Richard, Geoffrey, and John, were wrestling for the throne. (Two of my favorite movies, A Lion in Winter and Becket, also take place during this fascinating period.) Williamā€™s story has gotten lostā€¦

What is this book about?

Historical fact and fiction are entwined in this engrossing story about the infamous William Marshal. He was the penniless young knight who was plucked from obscurity to become a royal favourite and went on to be described as 'the true Lancelot'. This is the fascinating fictionalised story of the jealousies, romance and conflict within the royal court that led to him becoming a forgotten hero.

Barbara Perez Marquez Author Of The Cardboard Kingdom

From my list on to send your kid on an unforgettable adventure.

Why am I passionate about this?

As a writer, I strive to create stories that I wish I had found on shelves when I was younger. In that same way, every title on this list not only brings new ways to find adventures through reading, but will hopefully leave young readers with new skills to face the world around them. We often think just cause a story has fantastical elements that it makes them detached from reality, but give any of these a read and you'll find, the farther it is from real life, the brighter the common themes we all share shine through.
