My favorite books in the spicy fantasy genre

Why am I passionate about this?

As someone who has never lived in my own world, but in the fantasy one, these books make you escape life’s trials and live vicariously. I’ve been in love with the fantastical characters since I was a small child, my first book love (and it will always be that way) wasn’t a handsome prince, but a monster wanting to be accepted. Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein created a fictional monster inside me that left me wanting to find my own place outside the day to day of life’s redundancy and that is why I fell in love with Fantasy Fiction. I’m a mom, a partner, an activist, a survivor, a dreamer, and an author.

The books I picked & why

Book cover of House of Earth and Blood

E.Y. Kelley Why did I love this book?

This book left me sitting on the edge of my seat.

It isn’t often I felt my body shape and fiery personality were portrayed by a fiction novel. However, Sarah Mass brought me to life with Bryce Quinlan. The adventure, heartache, turmoil, passion, and mystery that Mass created kept me not only involved but also wanting more. I highly recommend this read!

E.Y. Kelley Why did I love this book?

The only thing I need to say is: Poppy and Casteel. I was immediately struck by this book and have followed up with the whole series.

Casteel is the man of any woman’s dreams and you won’t go wrong in delving into the world that Armentrout created. There is something about a story where the lead MMC knows, without a doubt, that his woman is strong enough to handle her stuff, but protective enough to still be beside her through it all.

This is an epic tale of not only romance and adventure, but personal growth, battling one's demons, and fighting for those you love.

Book cover of Wicked Fate

E.Y. Kelley Why did I love this book?

Stokes took me on a RH rollercoaster with this strong female lead and the mouth-watering trio of Monsterish men. This is a spicy read that will leave you wanting to join in on the chaos and revel in the badassery.

Fantasy RH books are growing more popular, and I feel as though this one can join the ranks of so many well-known series already out there. Monique keeps you on the edge as you twist and turn through the story, giving you plenty to love and despise about each character, and ending with you wanting book 2 sooner rather than later.

Book cover of Scarred

E.Y. Kelley Why did I love this book?

This retelling of a much more twisted version of The Lion King’s villain had me sunk, hook, line, and sinker. The story kept me so invested, it was a one-day read, and I truly wanted more.

Every kid remembers the epic moment when Scar held onto Mufassa's paws and told him, "Long Live The King." This story brought that to life, but gave you a spicier, more morally grey version where Scar isn't the villain, but he definitely isn't the hero either.

Emily has a way with her magical retellings, this one being on the top of my list for a standalone read.

Book cover of The Awakening

E.Y. Kelley Why did I love this book?

If you’ve ever wanted to throw a book and yet hug it at the same time, this series will do it for you.

The world Peckham and Valenti created is to die for, and the characters will give you a love/hate battle of wills. Be prepared for dragons you want to capture and keep, vampires that you'd let bite you, and villains you'll hate worse than Delores Umbridge.

The Amazon.com and Wall Street Journal #1 bestselling dark fantasy romance series from authors Caroline Peckham & Susanne Valenti

I’m a Gemini. Impulsive. Curious. Headstrong. A twin. Heir to a throne I know nothing about. And it turns out, I’m Fae.

But of course there’s a catch - all I have to do to claim my birth right is prove that I’m the most powerful supernatural in the whole of Solaria. And sure, technically that’s true as I’m the daughter of the Savage King. But the bit they didn’t put in the brochure was that every single Fae in this…

Why am I passionate about this?

I am a freelance writer from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, specializing in media history and speculative fiction. I have been enchanted by animation since childhood and followed many series avidly through adulthood. My viewing inspired my MA thesis on the history of animation, out of which grew two books on the history and theory of animation on television, America 'Toons In: A History of Television Animation (available from McFarland and Co.) and The Encyclopedia of American Animated Television Shows (available from Rowman and Littlefield). Hopefully, others will follow.
