Jen Desmarais Author Of Crushing It

From my list on queer cozy YA romances that make you want to fall in love.

Why am I passionate about this?

When I was a teenager, I didn’t have romance in my life. I was so extremely shy that I could barely look at people I thought were cute, let alone talk to them. I lived vicariously through books. Now that I’m older (and way less shy), I still love reliving that time of my life through books. How would I have reacted differently in the same situation? How would things have been different if I had been more outgoing? Only recently, I realized that I was queer, and I’ve been slowly dipping my toes into that world as well.

Jen Desmarais Why did Jen love this book?

I adored this book from the moment I read the first page of the first graphic novel! I fell in love with Nick and Charlie and related so hard to the struggles that they were going through, even though I’m older than they are. It brought me back to how I felt in high school.

Charlie’s eating disorder, especially, really struck a nerve, and I thought it was handled with such beautiful rawness. Note: I read it before watching the TV show, which I also love.

David R. George III Why did David love this book?

I had long known of Jeff VanderMeer's Southern Reach series, and while I had seen and enjoyed the film, I'd never read any of the writer's work. Indeed, while I read a great deal of science fiction when I was younger, I tend these days toward literary fiction. But something compelled me to dive into the first book of the Southern Reach series, and it did not disappoint. The writing is evocative and strong, painting an almost esoteric picture of a mystery equal parts science, psychology, anthropology, and societal. It is by turns intriguing and haunting.

Livi Michael Why did Livi love this book?

I loved Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell so much that I actually put off reading Piranesi, afraid of disappointment. But now I can say it has actually supplanted the earlier novel in my affections! It is again somewhat difficult to describe; dreamlike and surreal, magical and mysterious, but certainly not a ‘typical’ fantasy novel, whatever that might be. The main character, Piranesi, lives alone in a house full of statues, that is wreathed in clouds and deluged by floods. He is visited mainly by birds, and by the mysterious ‘Other’. This may not sound like much of a premise for a plot, and indeed it would be easy just to write about the imagery in Piranesi, which is exquisite, or the profundity of the ideas and themes, but this would not do justice to a narrative that is as propulsive as any thriller.
A compellingly beautiful read.

Book cover of Skulduggery Pleasant

Beau Johnston Author Of Sleep with One Eye Open

From my list on casual (or non) readers.

Why am I passionate about this?

I despise long-winded books with an electoral roll of characters or characters with unnecessarily complex names. Reading should be a pleasure, not a chore. High school does its best to suck the joy out of reading with its “what did the author mean here?” nonsense. If the reader has to guess what the author means, the author failed to tell their story. Symbolism and hidden meanings are a joke. I won’t read pretentious books that people only read so they can say they’ve read them. One of the reasons I started writing was to reach people who ended up as non-readers because high school ruined reading for them.

Beau's book list on casual (or non) readers

Beau Johnston Why did Beau love this book?

Originally, I was looking for a book series to get my 12-year-old (non-reader) nephew interested in reading. The cover art is great, and the description, “a smart-ass skeleton detective and a secret magic world, in the shadows of the real world,” piqued my interest. Yes, an actual walking, talking skeleton.

I first purchased a copy for myself so I would know if it was appropriate for him. I enjoyed reading it so much that I went out the next day and bought him the first four books in the series. They became the first books he voluntarily read. I love the depictions of magic (and magical creatures) in the real world and the constant battle to keep regular humans ignorant of the events that take place virtually right in front of them.
