Why am I passionate about this?

As a reader and an author, I prefer young adult novels because they tend to focus more on character growth and development than other genres, but I’m particularly drawn to both historical and fantasy period pieces in books and film. The medieval ages especially, with their castles and feudalistic way of life, have always fascinated me. This fascination was largely filled by reading and watching fairy tales and novel adaptations while growing up. Nowadays, I gravitate toward retellings like a moth to the flame, as I get to relive stories that have a special place in my heart in a fresh new way.

The books I picked & why

Book cover of Stepsister

Samantha Gillespie Why did I love this book?

This is a unique take on the Grimm brothers' version of Cinderella, told from one of the ugly stepsister's point of view. It's a tale about finding who you are and learning to be true to yourself, and it reveals the beauty of the human heart. The author does a remarkable job by giving us a conflicted main character, with both negative and positive traits. Donnelly also doesn't take the easy road and make Ella (Cinderella) the pretty bad guy everyone loves to hate, with flaws of her own despite her kindness and perfect beauty.

It's a story every young girl should read, and one that I will carry with me for a long time.

By Jennifer Donnelly,

Why should I read it?

5 authors picked Stepsister as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it. This book is for kids age 12, 13, 14, and 15.

What is this book about?

'In an ancient city by the sea, three sisters - a maiden, a mother, and a crone - are drawing maps by candlelight. Sombre, with piercing grey eyes, they are the three Fates, and every map is a human life . . .'

Stepsister takes up where Cinderella's tale ends. We meet Isabelle, the younger of Cinderella's two stepsisters. Ella is considered beautiful; stepsister Isabelle is not. Isabelle is fearless, brave, and strong-willed. She fences better than any boy, and takes her stallion over jumps that grown men fear to attempt. It doesn't matter, though; these qualities are not valued…

Book cover of My Lady Jane

Samantha Gillespie Why did I love this book?

My Lady Jane is a retelling of the true-life story of Lady Jane Gray, who lived in Tudor England during the reign of Edward VI. Though the plot isn’t as fast-paced as other novels, it is nonetheless engaging, and so are its main characters, with plenty of banter and humor throughout the whole book that had me laughing out loud on several occasions. If you are into period pieces, this lighthearted read is guaranteed to entertain you.

What is this book about?

A clever, hilarious and engaging retelling of the rise to power of Lady Jane Grey.

A comical, fantastical and witty re-imagining of the Tudor world, perfect for fans of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. Lady Jane Grey, sixteen, is about to be married to a total stranger - and caught up in an insidious plot to rob her cousin, King Edward, of his throne. But that's the least of Jane's problems. Book cover of Cruel Beauty

Samantha Gillespie Why did I love this book?

This is one of the most original retellings of Beauty and Beast I’ve read. The author creates a unique world of Greek mythology mixed with dark lore and fantasy that draws you in. I like flawed characters, and Cruel Beauty does not disappoint in this area. The main character, Nyx, is a morally gray heroine who is angry and bitter and conflicted, but also brave, snarky, and defiant, and you can’t help but root for her. And then there’s Ignifex, the charming villain who steals her heart, adding a complex, star-crossed lovers romance, which I’m a big sucker for. Cruel Beauty is darkly whimsical, eerie, and full of suspense, and keeps you invested all the way through its unexpected ending.

If you're excited about the upcoming Disney film Beauty and the Beast, starring Emma Watson, don't miss Cruel Beauty. The romance of Beauty and the Beast meets the adventure of Graceling in this dazzling fantasy novel about our deepest desires and their power to change our destiny. Perfect for fans of bestselling An Ember in the Ashes and A Court of Thorns and Roses, this gorgeously written debut infuses the classic fairy tale with glittering magic, a feisty heroine, and a romance sure to take your breath away. Betrothed to the evil ruler of her kingdom, Nyx has always known…

Book cover of Cress

Samantha Gillespie Why did I love this book?

This is the third book in the Lunar Chronicles. Although I loved all the books in this series, Cress is by far my favorite. The story flows smoothly and has plenty of action and excitement to keep you turning the page. I also love that Cress is so well written that her easily frightened nature and fragility come across as realistic and relatable, avoiding the common pitfall of being negatively viewed traits that turn readers off. The love interest, a charming and self-obsessed space pirate who instantly challenges Cress's overly romanticized view of heroes, is a great character as well, lending to a great dynamic with an overabundance of hilarious interactions between the two characters.

Book cover of The Madman's Daughter

Samantha Gillespie Why did I love this book?

This atmospheric novel, a retelling of The Island of Doctor Moreau, is a perfect blend of gothic romance and haunting mystery. It’s beautifully written, well-paced, and filled with unexpected twists. I love the feminist theme presented through the main character, Juliet, who is independent despite the hardships she endures, is not dissuaded from pursuing her passion for science even though it wasn’t proper for a woman to do so at the time. There is also an underlying theme throughout the book that expertly juxtaposes sanity and madness, eliciting the question of where the line should be drawn.

What is this book about?

For fans of Libba Bray, this first book in a gothic suspense trilogy is inspired by H. G. Wells's The Island of Dr. Moreau and has been hailed by New York Times bestseller Carrie Ryan as having "beautiful writing, breakneck pacing, a pulse-pounding mystery, and an irresistible romance."

But when Juliet learns her father is still alive and working on a remote tropical island,…
