The best books for middle graders to learn about the past

I grew up in a house where reading was encouraged, and I wanted to carry that tradition onto my kid. He was drawn to the Magic Tree House series, and I loved these books, too. We read all of the books in the series, but I believe this book is the first.

As we read about Jack and Annie's adventures in this book (They are the main characters.), we learned a good deal about dinosaurs and the prehistoric past. It's a great way to understand history. I enjoyed how Jack and Annie wound up in a world of dinosaurs and figured out how to return home.

My son gravitated toward the I Survived books after graduating from the Magic Tree House series. My son, who is 23, still reads I Survived books when new ones come out. I do, too.

The books usually have children as the main characters who travel back in time. I had never heard of the Great Molasses Flood, but I was fascinated to learn about a massive tank in Boston containing sticky and gooey molasses exploding onto the streets in the North End neighborhood and how the community dealt with the mess and cleanup. 

In school, I've always been fascinated by history. I wish these books existed when I was a kid because they make learning about the past easy to understand.

I wish everyone would read about the Holocaust. It's a hard topic to digest, especially for a child. The main character is an orphan trying to survive on the streets of Warsaw, Poland, during World War II. Parts of the book are frightening. 

Sadly, antisemitism has resurfaced today; it has never really disappeared. Carrying such hatred, whether in the past or the present, is hard for me to wrap my head around. Reading this book, I was able to get an inside look at a character who wanted to be a Nazi soldier until he truly understood the evil and horrors these soldiers caused. 

My son read the book in middle school and introduced it to me. Afterward, we talked about the holocaust and why it's important to never forget.

Whenever I come across a list of banned books, I'm surprised to see this one at or near the top. The 14-year-old protagonist is funny. Since it's semi-autobiographical, I learned a bit about Native American history, life on the Spokane Indian Reservation, and what the main character experiences attending a white racist school a few miles from the reservation.

I read this book years ago and should reread it. I was much younger then. We change as we grow; despite that, I believe my feelings toward the main character would remain sympathetic because it's a struggle to fit in and be comfortable in two different worlds.

I read the book after I watched the movie, and I'm glad I did. The book provided more background about the characters, the space program, the Civil Rights era, the Cold War, and the fight for gender equality.

I love discovering heroes, and yes, these women were true heroes. They were courageous, smart, and remarkable. Stories about people who press on despite roadblocks are to be admired. That's what I came away with from this book.
