Why read it?

5 authors picked Dinosaurs Before Dark as one of their favorite books. Why do they recommend it?

I grew up in a house where reading was encouraged, and I wanted to carry that tradition onto my kid. He was drawn to the Magic Tree House series, and I loved these books, too. We read all of the books in the series, but I believe this book is the first.

As we read about Jack and Annie's adventures in this book (They are the main characters.), we learned a good deal about dinosaurs and the prehistoric past. It's a great way to understand history. I enjoyed how Jack and Annie wound up in a world of dinosaurs…

From Michele's list on middle graders to learn about the past.

This book is full of adventure but set in constantly shifting visits to other continents and other periods of history.

It includes plenty of discussion of animal life and foreign peoples or historical heroes. We read about twenty of these books, whose illustrations, esp the more recent ones in color, enlivened the story for a boy who cannot yet read but is powerfully engaged in good stories.

These books plant interests in history, travel, the environment, and other kids trying new things.

This sweet book, one of a long-running series, features Jack and Annie, two very different siblings who must work together to survive a time travel trip to the age of dinosaurs. It’s action-packed but also historically educational and instructive.

I loved reading this book and all the Magic Treehouse books to my kids when they were little as each could relate to one of the siblings. I especially love how the power to time travel comes from the actual books in the treehouse, reinforcing the magic of reading to beginners.

As a homeschool parent, I am always looking for fun books that teach, almost without children realizing. These are definitely hard to find, but the number 1 series that always comes to mind is The Magic Treehouse. In these books, children travel back in time to experience history firsthand. My kids love the characters and the fascinating adventures, and I love that they are educational and easy to read. When teaching history, I always check to see if there is a book in this series to help enrich our studies.

The best part about this story is that the siblings get teleported into different historical moments. That’s a moment that every kid would love to experience, and I wished for the same. I also had a lot of fun learning about the ancient times that the siblings were teleported into.
