I've always been a reader. In my childhood, I read Hardy Boys novels by the bucketload. I loved scholastic book fairs, pouring over the lists to find new books to read. Then my uncle gave me The Hobbit followed by giving me a hardback set of Lord of the Rings for Christmas of the 6th Grade. After that, my mother gave me Pawn of Prophecy, which cemented my love of the genre. I write fantasy because of all the books I listed. Each one led me down a path that ended with me publishing my first novel.
I was in the sixth grade and had just moved over Christmas break. Maybe a month after the move, my mom, out of the blue, bought me this book, sensing I was having a rough time. The story follows a teenager, about 15, as he goes on a quest. It enthralled me as I followed Garion on his story.

When I read this book after my mom gave it to me for Christmas in 7th Grade, I was hooked on the masterful writing of Robert Jordan. It was my first time reading limited third person and how he made each character come alive.
While this is not my favorite book in the series, it hooked me. I waited for each new release, diving into fan forums and theory crafting. I loved his foreshadowing and his world-building. No other author had a greater impact on my writing style than RJ.

I picked this book up as a lark at the SeaTac Borders Bookstore while waiting to fly down to my grandparents' 50th wedding anniversary celebration. I can't really say why I bought it, but I have never had a book series that challenged me more.
The philosophy and metaphysics of this world had me thinking like no other books did. It pushed me to write far more gray characters and to see a human as a flawed yet beautiful amalgamation of strengths and weaknesses. Bakker is fearless in his subject matters, and I try to be as well. I write about the best and worst of humanity because of the depths of Bakker's broken characters.

I have read a lot of fantasy in the 90s, but until I read Margaret Weis and Tracey Hickman, it had all been basically Europe with magic. Dragon Wing is a world of floating islands where water is scarce and wars are fought over it. Humans fly on dragons. Elves sail on airships.
It takes place in one of four elemental worlds that are all so different and so imaginative. They are so much different from our worlds and taught me to create worlds that were just impossible outside of magic and fantasy. Its structure is also very similar to MalazanBook of the Fallen, where we're following different characters in each book but all building toward something amazing. Plus, there's a crazy wizard named Zifnab that sometimes thinks he's Gandalf and sometimes that he's Luke Skywalker.

This is the first pure fantasy book I had ever read. In the summer break between my 4th and 5th Grade, while my Mom, little brother, and I were visiting my grandparents in California, I was at the pool. I loved going to the pool and swimming, but this day, my Uncle Dave lent me a battered paperback of his favorite book. Instead of swimming, I was reading this amazing story. And while it was a few more years before I was able to tackle The Lord of the Rings, this was the beginning of my love for fantasy.
The Hobbit is a fun adventure. Some danger. Some whimsy. Tragic death. I could not put this book down.

I’ve adored reading a good snarky first-person story since I first read Bloodlist, so long as the snark doesn’t go too far and become total unlikeable jerk… It can be a fine line!I hope I stay on the right side of it, but having read it enough and written in it for years with my Blood Rights Series, I feel qualified to say I’m a…snark connoisseur. (If you ask my family, this is how my own internal/life narrator speaks! My mother says that my character Dakota is me if I “said everything aloud that I think in my head.” She’s probably right, and I’m okay with that.)
