Why am I passionate about this?

I love stories where people have fantastical powers, especially if they’re set in our world. I grew up with Marvel and DC telling me stories about people who could always be counted on to save the day. But I had a frustration. Those comic stories often ended badly when it came to relationships. If a character was in love, they invariably broke up, or the love interest was kidnapped or killed. I’ve collected these awesome examples of stories where superpowers don’t mean being alone. They capture the blend that I’ve tried to create in my own books: an exciting story full of adventure that can also warm the heart.

The books I picked & why

Book cover of Trail of Lightning

Jennifer Carole Lewis Why did I love this book?

This book is an award-winning, fast-paced, post-apocalyptic adventure. The heroine, Maggie, is a monster killer with supernatural speed and strength and a snarky, take-no-prisoners attitude. The hero, Kai, is a medicine man who helps her in her quest to identify a new monster attacking her people. I absolutely adored reading this book and immediately sought out other stories by the same author.  he’s got an amazing talent for making a scene feel absolutely real and an excellent balance of gasp-out-loud action and repeat-it-to-yourself-later humor.

Book cover of Deal with the Devil

Jennifer Carole Lewis Why did I love this book?

In a destroyed world, information is the ultimate power. This book takes place in an urban, post-apocalyptic wasteland with a trio of superpowered ladies who are using their gifts to restore a little comfort to their neighborhood. An escaped mercenary squad offers them the score of a lifetime: a bunker full of books just waiting to be retrieved. The heroine, Nina, agrees but doesn’t trust the squad. The squad leader, Knox, is luring Nina into a trap but as the two of them start to fall in love, he realizes he’s going to have to choose between rescuing the hostage and saving Nina. This story is one of my all-time favorites, along with its sequels. Nina is a rare combination of kindness and strength and Knox is a wonderful example of the tarnished hero seeking redemption. I read this series at least twice each year.

Jennifer Carole Lewis Why did I love this book?

High school is hard enough to survive. Adding teleportation makes it freakin’ impossible. Our hero, Cole, is an adorable nerd about to finish his senior year of high school when he suddenly develops the talent of teleportation (including one adventure when he accidentally zaps himself into his locker). Mysterious men in black start showing up wherever he is and Cole needs to figure out what he’s doing fast if he wants to escape. Luckily, his latest crush, Malik, is proving to be a steadfast friend and maybe a little more. Nathan has an amazing talent for bringing his characters to life and creates some of the sweetest love stories I’ve ever read. He’s a fellow comic-book fan and fans of the X-Men and Avengers will love his stories.

Book cover of Dark Descendant

Jennifer Carole Lewis Why did I love this book?

What are you supposed to say when you find out that you’re the descendant of an actual god? The heroine, Nikki, wakes up to discover that she is now immortal and has supernatural powers, thanks to being a descendant of Artemis. Of course, no one can tell her exactly what those powers are or how to use them. The first book in the series follows her adventure as she learns how to use her supernatural gifts to hunt along with her skills as private investigator. Along the way, the sparks burn with a passionate attraction to a fellow god descendant, Jamaal, who has the powers of Kali and a difficult temper. It’s a great urban fantasy series that taps into a lot of different mythologies and keeps the action at full tilt.
