Why am I passionate about this?

I love happy endings and happily-ever-afters. I love reading and writing books that make people happy, give them hope, and bring romance into their lives. Shakespeare’s plays inspired me to explore the ways a writer can convey strong emotions with the written word. One of the first romances I ever read was Pride and Prejudice, and it changed my life. It made me laugh, but it also taught me to believe in the power of love and the power of storytelling. I have written thirty-two romance novels. I like to spread the love!

The books I picked & why

Book cover of Pride and Prejudice

Jennifer Beckstrand Why did I love this book?

My sister “discovered” Pride and Prejudice when I was in junior high school, and she used to read me passages from the book while we ate breakfast. I fell in love with Elizabeth, Mr. Darcy, and the whole cast of delightful, flawed, hilarious characters in this quintessential romance. I have probably read Pride and Prejudice twenty times, and I am delighted with the language, the relationships, and the romance every time I read it. I love how Jane Austen celebrates and explores enduring family relationships, human foibles, and what it means to be deeply good. If you only read one romance in your entire life, Pride and Prejudice should be the one. A delightful read for anyone and everyone who believes in the pleasure of story and the power of love.

Book cover of Ain't She Sweet?

Jennifer Beckstrand Why did I love this book?

Susan Elizabeth Philips puts delicious words and phrases on the page and invites readers to the feast. I particularly love Ain’t She Sweet? for its themes of redemption, forgiveness, and holding your head up high when the chips are down. SEP takes a totally unlikable, broken character (Sugar Beth) and makes her relatable, lovable, and ultimately redeemable. I was stunned at how much I hated Sugar Beth at the beginning of the book and how fervently I adored her by the end. This book is toe-curlingly romantic and an absolute joy to read.

What is this book about?

In high school Sugar Carey had reigned supreme. She alone had decided what or who was cool. Her spiral perm had been the perm against which all others were measured, and her opinion on which boys were acceptable to date the only one that counted. A beautiful, blonde - if not always benevolent - dictator, she had a reputation for being the wild child of Parrish, Mississippi, the girl most likely to set the world on fire, and leave a trail of destruction in her wake. When she left home she swore she'd never return. Only now, fifteen years and…

Book cover of Ransom

Jennifer Beckstrand Why did I love this book?

I have never read a Julie Garwood book I didn’t adore, but I think this is my favorite. Ransom is a quintessential historical romance with a muscular hero and a damsel in distress, which is why you definitely need to read it. It will convert you to the romance genre. Ransom contains themes that might be considered old-fashioned in today’s throwaway world, but they still hold profound meaning for me: honor, brotherhood, loyalty, faithfulness, and sacrifice. Who doesn’t love a hero who is willing to give his life for the woman he loves?

Book cover of Enchantment: A Classic Fantasy with a Modern Twist

Jennifer Beckstrand Why did I love this book?

Orson Scott Card is best known for his masterful science fiction books like Ender’s Game and Speaker for the Dead, but Enchantment is my favorite of his. Enchantment is a modern-day take on Sleeping Beauty that is both breathtakingly exciting and wildly romantic. The interpretation of the fairy tale is so clever and the writing is so good, I find myself coming back to this book again and again. Nobody can write deeply good and complex characters quite like Orson Scott Card. He is a master.

Book cover of Edenbrooke

Jennifer Beckstrand Why did I love this book?

Edenbrooke is an easy read full of pure pleasure. This book explores innocence and idealistic love, and I adore it just for that reason. Last year I interviewed Julianne on my book club, and she talked about how since her divorce, she can’t write a book like Edenbrooke ever again. I told her that the innocence is what I love about her book. Most of us have moved past innocence, but we still like to visit that place and remember when love was young and fresh and new and we believed in the beauty of our dreams.
