Why am I passionate about this?

I’m a practical, straight-talking New Zealander who has lived in the UK since 2007. I’ve coached managers for over a decade, and one thing they all have in common is that they want to develop and empower their teams. What I love the most about my work is seeing the ‘aha’ moments unfold when they work out a path that is right for them. Jude Sclater Why did I love this book?

I love this book because the title tells you all you need to know, and the short chapters packed with stories and practical advice show you what to do about it. Goldsmith’s direct yet gentle style shines through, and you can see why he’s considered one of the best coaches in the world.

The most helpful thing for me is that he gives you examples of things to say, for example, when asking for feedback. One thing to be aware of is that the language is a bit dated, especially around gender, and many of the behaviors may speak more to men than women. Marshall addresses this in a book co-written with Sally Helgesen called How Women Rise, which I’m reading right now.

Jude Sclater Why did I love this book?

I love the big message in this book, which is to focus more on finding the right question instead of the right answer.

I read the intro before going into a coaching session and used the idea of question-thinking with the person I was coaching. We looked at the questions she was asking herself as she went into a meeting with her maternity cover and together we turned those into positive and curious ones. She later came back and told me it worked, and the meeting went much better than she thought it would. Personally, I’ve gotten a lot of benefits from noticing when I’m asking myself judger questions and turning those into learner ones instead. Read the book to find out what I mean.

Jude Sclater Why did I love this book?

I love this book because it taught me emotional self-control. One of the things I really disliked about myself was how stressed I’d get and then take it out on my team. I’d always apologize, but I think they were often afraid of me and not sure which Jude they’d get. Peters’ Chimp model helped me to understand why this was happening and what to do about it.

I learned to nurture my ‘chimp’ brain more, notice when I was talking to other ‘chimps,’ know how to calm them, and most of all, manage my stress better. I often explain this model to the managers I coach to help them embrace their emotions as a way of managing them.

Jude Sclater Why did I love this book?

I love this book because the author isn’t a showy networker out there working the room. He’s like me. Likes to make connections and develop relationships, which, let’s face it, is what business is all about.

I usually get stuck on what to say to someone I want to catch up with, but Munz-Jones provides some examples to get you started. I took his advice that it’s never too late to get back in contact with someone and emailed a mentor I’d lost touch with. She replied, and I’ve really enjoyed meeting up with her again.

Jude Sclater Why did I love this book?

I love this book because it explains how to coach in a simple and easy-to-understand way. It’s one of the few books on coaching actually written for managers and has just enough theory so you know what Bungay-Stanier is saying is legit but not so much that it stops being practical.

I use the strategic question all the time with myself and others I coach, ‘If you’re saying yes to this, what are you saying no to?’ It has helped me realize that I don’t need to do everything and that focusing my energy on a few things is better than spreading myself thin on everything.

What is my book about?

My book is for new managers who want to build a strong team where everyone feels empowered and challenged. It won’t make you into a coach but it will help you use coach-like principles to successfully make the move from individual contributor to manager.

Part one gives you all the knowledge you need to be able to think like a coach. It also introduces the two-step coaching model, which was created with the busy manager in mind to make coaching easy. Part two helps you apply these principles to common conversations such as giving feedback, goal setting, problem solving and delegation. Throughout there are suggested experiments to try and at the back a question bank for quick reference.
