100 books like Earth Prayers

I appreciate that a secular environmental organization such as Sierra Club recognized the importance of turning to religious voices to help frame the environmental crisis and how we can respond from a faith perspective. There are thirty-two essays from a wide range of religious leaders, thinkers, activists, and teachers, some well-known and some you’ll be delighted to discover. These aren’t academic essays, but personal reflections on the beauty of Creation and how our religious traditions equip us for protecting this planet. It’s small enough to fit into your backpack so that you can read, meditate, and contemplate on your hike!

Sally Bingham founded and served as president of Interfaith Power & Light, one of the most important interreligious organizations addressing climate and environmental crises. For this 2009 book, she invited twenty religious leaders from a myriad of traditions, including Buddhist, Evangelical Christian, Unitarian-Universalist, Muslim, and Judaism, to name a few. Though the book is more than a decade old, their reflections are timeless. And they give us a snapshot of what religious leaders were saying about ecology and faith at a time when environmental awareness was still struggling to gain traction.

This is a perfect book to take on a hike in the woods, a walk along the beach, or a stroll down a country lane. The author combines his own poetic reflections with those of sages from many different religious traditions across the millennia. There are six sections and a set of readings for each day of the week. This book would be ideal for church camp devotionals, a Lenten devotional, or for your summer reading to get you centered and attentive to God’s Creation.

This is an ideal book for a church camping retreat, youth group devotions, or an Earth Care team looking for ready-made readings and prayers to orient and ground their work. There are four weeks of devotions with readings for morning, midday, and evening each of the seven days. So there are actually 84 options to choose from! Each day includes hymns, scripture readings, reflections, and prayers. Though this is not an interfaith book per se, the author includes “Another Voice” reflections from a wide range of Christian ecumenical voices.

This book has been a staple in my marriage. On the days when I am tired or need a reminder that my husband is, first and foremost, a child of God, I go back to this book.

Stormie’s prayers are so eloquently written and cover things that, early on, I would have never thought to pray for my husband. I have seen my marriage transform because of the prayers in this book. 

Live a Praying Life is, hands-down, my top pick when it comes to making a study of prayer. Jennifer Kennedy Dean understands that we want to know the “why” and the “how” behind prayer, and she tackles the thorny questions to equip us to persevere when it doesn’t look like the needle is moving. In looking at the lives of folks who’ve gone through more than a few tricky places (guys like Joseph, who thought he was supposed to be a ruler but wound up being sold as a slave), Dean warns us not to mistake God’s will for his ways, or confuse what he is doing with how he is doing it. People have called Henri Nouwen many things: a priest, an author, a spiritual guide, a natural mystic. His books have sold millions of copies and continue to resonate deeply with people from all walks of life. In 2000, when asked to share the book that had most influenced her life, Hillary Clinton chose Nouwen’s The Return of the Prodigal Son. If you’re looking for a well-loved prayer “classic,” you won’t find many books with more staying power than Andrew Murray’s With Christ in the School of Prayer. Murray doesn’t see prayer as one facet of the Christian life; rather, he says that it is the “root and strength” of all that we do. “Jesus never taught his disciples how to preach,” Murray writes, “only how to pray.” And the secret to a powerful prayer life is abiding in Christ—growing into his likeness—so that our lives (including our thoughts and desires) look more like his. As we enroll in Jesus’ “school of prayer", we will learn to pray in harmony with God, be equipped to impact our world, and discover the true purpose of prayer.

When we think prayer is hard, we need a reminder of God’s listening ear. While there are limitless ways to connect with the Lord, Praying God’s Word invites us into conversation when we don’t know what to say.

Scripture is alive and active, and God Himself gives us words when we don’t have any. The thing I loved about this book is that it’s a springboard to get us started with this type of prayer. When I tried praying this way, I felt closer to God because His words were right there.

I’ve prayed through it many times and have given away countless copies to others. Each day Batterson invites a new way to look at prayer and a practical way to start a morning devotion time all grounded in scripture. As a writer I love the focus on creativity and honoring ideas.
