Why am I passionate about this?

I am a forensic and clinical psychologist and have worked years with violent criminals for over 30 years.  I am passionate about understanding how and why ordinary people end up doing extraordinary things and specialise in violent crimes by women. Some of the best descriptions of the inner lives of criminals are found in works of fiction, revealing how people think, feel and react. The novels I chose do this brilliantly, leading the reader into the mind of the characters, evoking compassion as well as shock and horror. The psychiatric memoirs describe the fascinating work of psychotherapy with criminal patients and unravel the mysteries of what draws people to violence, even murder.

The books I picked & why

Book cover of The Perfect Nanny

Anna Motz Why did I love this book?

This novel focusses on the murder of two children by a nanny. Based on a true case, in NYC of a nanny who kills two young children, Slimani weaves themes of racial and social injustice into her story, told through the eyes of the narrator. Despite the horror of the crimes, readers will gain a understanding of how and why the nanny, Louise, ends up taking such extreme action. Though fictionalised, it offers an accurate psychological portrait of profound disturbance and the internal logic that drives fatal assaults.

Book cover of The Devil You Know: Encounters in Forensic Psychiatry

Anna Motz Why did I love this book?

I love this book because of how forensic psychiatrist and psychotherapist Dr Adshead and dramatist Eileen Horne reveal what compels people to commit crimes. I enjoyed the variety of the cases described, and the dialogue between Adshead and her patients. By taking me into her forensic psychotherapy sessions she brings the therapeutic encounter with offender patients to life. Although I do very similar work, in prisons and clinics I still learned much from her perspective and was moved by how compassionate, nuanced and rich in detail these stories were, helping me to understand the evolution and treatment of crimes within a social and political context.

Book cover of Enduring Love

Anna Motz Why did I love this book?

I first read this book some years ago in one sitting, and have returned to it time and again. I love how it gets right inside the protagonist’s mind, telling the story of erotomania from within his disturbed mind. A chance encounter between two men following a fatal ballooning accident leads to an obsession by Jed, that destroys the life of the man he stalks. I found McKewan’s intricate exploration of obsessive fixation, known as De Cleremabault’s Syndrome both chilling and immersive, like erotomania itself.

Book cover of Violence: Reflections on a National Epidemic

Anna Motz Why did I love this book?

I loved how Gilligan tells the stories of his work and how clearly he describes the shame that drives so many men to murder. As a forensic psychiatrist working in a high security prison in Massachusetts, Gilligan met so many killers who felt that their only means to self-preservation and respect was through killing. I was particularly moved by the opening passages in which he tells the story of his own family, and the immigration and poverty that defined their lives. By weaving the autobiographical and the clinical Gilligan drew me into this intensely disturbing world of murderers, and brought these men out of the shadows.

What is this book about?

Drawing on firsthand experience as a prison psychiatrist, his own family history, and literature, Gilligan unveils the motives of men who commit horrifying crimes, men who will not only kill others but destroy themselves rather than suffer a loss of self-respect. With devastating clarity, Gilligan traces the role that shame plays in the etiology of murder and explains why our present penal system only exacerbates it. Brilliantly argued, harrowing in its portraits of the walking dead, Violence should be read by anyone concerned with this national epidemic and its widespread consequences.

"Extraordinary. Gilligan's recommendations concerning what does work to prevent…

Book cover of Beloved

Anna Motz Why did I love this book?

Toni Morrison’s classic novel about infanticide is one of my all-time favourites, and is incredibly powerful, as well as disturbing. I love her language and its poetry, as well as the fantastic voice of her narrator, Sadie. Like all great novelists, Morrison is able to evoke the inner world of Sadie, and her struggles as an enslaved woman. The social context of acts like this is brought beautifully to life here, and echoes with themes of motherhood, pain, secrecy and love.

If Love Could Kill: The Myths and Truths of Women Who Commit Violence

By Anna Motz,

Book cover of If Love Could Kill: The Myths and Truths of Women Who Commit Violence

What is my book about?

The book is an exploration of the motivations of women who commit crimes, I am passionate about understanding rather than simply condemning those patients who are perpetrators as well as victims of violence. It describes the settings that the women are in, the trauma that is re-enacted in their crimes, and the therapeutic and social forces that can impact them in a positive way, undoing some of the adversity of their pasts.

It outlines, from the inside, the practice of forensic psychotherapy and offers a personal memoir describing 30 years of work with women who commit acts of violence, debunking commonly held myths.

Why am I passionate about this?

Writer, reader, editor, reviewer, publisher… those are all parts of me. With a lifetime of experience in the “words” industry, I have a pretty good handle on what makes a book not just good, but hot. I say this with the understanding that each reader brings their own histories to the reading experience, and what one person may like, another may not. Nonetheless, I offer you my professional and personal favorites in the mystery/thriller/suspense categories. It is my sincere hope that you find these books as addictive as I’d found them. Superb and clever writing, engaging characters, unpredictable plots—yes, please! Though I occasionally step outside my comfort zone, I'm consistently drawn back to these categories.
