The best books for new moms to listen, learn, and laugh with their children

Joan Budilovsky Author Of Sages of Young Ages
By Joan Budilovsky

Who am I?

I’ve taught yoga and meditation for decades to children from ages 3 to 93. My Doctorate is in Education from the University of Illinois at Chicago. I love to experience personal development and child development has a very special place in my heart. I learn so much from them! It is particularly fun to watch children discover and explore life. Everything old is new again! Sages of Young Ages can open our eyes if we simply open our ears to each child’s unique spoken truths.

One Minute Wisdom

By Anthony De Mello,

Book cover of One Minute Wisdom

Why this book?

I love the simplicity of the stories with the catchy one-word titles. Short and sweet. They need not be read in any specific order. Each story stands on its own and each has a depth of meaning so that every time I read it I see something new in the story. This book was a model for me in my writing of Sages of Young Ages.

"Don't take yourself so personally" says Ram Dass. His humor, his insights, his ability to capture great lessons and truths in one line. This book made me think and laugh at the same time = quite a feat! I so appreciate his fun look at life with his deep sense of spiritual understanding. Fantastic read.

Stormy: A Story about Finding a Forever Home

By Guojing,

Book cover of Stormy: A Story about Finding a Forever Home

Why this book?

This is a picture book. No words. Yet it displays the depth of human sensitivities as few books can. The sensitive bonding of a young woman and a dog. Each an outcast - wanting to belong - and finding this in each other. My heart opens every time I read this book. I never get tired of it. An inspiration into the kindest essence of life. It is absolutely magnificent.

The Song of the Bird

By Anthony De Mello,

Book cover of The Song of the Bird

Why this book?

Short interesting titles to profound short stories. Each story offers a lesson to clearer soulful understandings. Humor, insights, simplicity – all the things I treasure and hope to be as a writer. Anthony deMello has influenced my world with new ways of looking at old things. I find this in children too – their new eyes looking at old things reminds me of how important fresh perspectives are to enjoying and appreciating life.

The Missing Piece

By Shel Silverstein,

Book cover of The Missing Piece

Why this book?

I discovered this book decades ago while sitting in the waiting room of a doctor’s office. I was there to teach yoga to the medical staff. The doctors were running late so I picked up one of the books on the table …aha! The Missing Piece! And it was just what I needed too. Although written for children, adults can also enjoy the simple yet profound lessons within. An easy read that will keep you and your children coming back to read over and over again. All these many years later, I still turn to it often for inspiration. Thanks Docs!
