My favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of The Replacement Wife

Leah St. James Why did I love this book?

I picked this book for its title (it intrigued me), but the author sucked me into the story from the first sentence—written from the antagonist’s point of view about a scheme he/she was perpetrating.

The author kept me guessing at his/her identity all the way through. (I remember getting a clue about 80 percent in…which was probably intentional.) It is a fantastic story told exceptionally well by a talented author.

Book cover of The Keeper of Happy Endings

Leah St. James Why did I love this book?

I love this author’s voice. To me, her writing reads almost like poetry, making me pause and reflect on the words and their importance in the story, even something as simple as the description of a box.

Aside from the author’s skill as a writer, she’s a great storyteller. This is a story about lifelong love and sacrifice, told with grace and dignity. It kept me turning the pages, hoping for the main character’s happy ending.

My 3rd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of The Broken Girls

Leah St. James Why did I love this book?

This story about the renovation of an old girls’ boarding school in a remote area of Vermont gave me the creeps…in a good way!

Going back and forth in time, the author weaves tragedies of the past with the present and evokes haunting images that are still with me weeks after I’ve finished the book. Luckily, the satisfying ending helped to make up for the “creepiness” that all the characters had been through.

Book cover of Lights of Imani

What is my book about?

Far from America lies an island Kingdom whose people have been separated after years of fighting… until one night when Princess Imani of the Western Kingdom takes a chance on friendship.

Normally I write adult fiction, and this is my only children’s book (so far!). The story was inspired by a little girl “adopted” for the holidays by my work team about a decade ago. All I knew was her name (Imani), her age (8), and that she loved princesses. I wrote the story as a fairytale for her, and I hope she enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.
