I’ve always loved science fiction. My father was an Asimov junkie, and our house was packed with science fiction novels and stories from Azimov to Heinlein to Wyndham and Wilhelm. I began writing science fiction in high school, yet only recently published my first 4 novels (one of which won a Bookfest award). I hold a bachelor’s degree in computer science (bioinformatics), and I stay on top of science to inform my writing. It’s through this background that I select novels, seeking out new tropes and ideas in technological advancement. Each of these novels I mention exceeded my expectations and then some. Pick one up today—you won’t be disappointed!
When I received Ninefox Gambit for Christmas, I have to say that I was blown away. What I loved the most about it wasn’t just that Yoon Ha Lee dropped me in the middle of a war and hit the ground running (from lazer blasts!) The tactician Shuos Jedao leads Cheris into an inner battle that turns out to be even more consequential than the war itself. A good sci-fi novel should challenge my conceptions of technology, society, and how the two work in tandem. Octavia Butler delivers! Lilith Iyapo finds herself on a spaceship with limited understanding of how she got there. She’s been kidnapped by an alien race and must figure out how to survive with foreign tech and dubiously-motivated alien kidnappers. Far from a kill-or-be-killed gorefest (which I also love, but this isn’t one), Octavia Butler uses the alien civilization as a tool to pick apart our own social situation. Written in 1987, this book has concepts within that I’ve still yet to see from others. Truly original and a stunning, mind-warping science fiction adventure, I’d recommend the entire Xenogenisis series (of which this is the series starter) for any science fiction fan!

And despite all of the character depth, Emma Watson manages to deliver a juicy, thick alien world that will leave you salivating for more!

What a phenomenal novel by Ann Leckie! I came across Ann Leckie’s series as I was working through books about cloning while I was writing my books. What do I love about it? The concepts, for sure: AI ships being negotiated, the entire idea of shipping minds around, a leader who sabotages herself to the detriment of her realm. All of these have been done to some extent before, but not at the scale that Ann Leckie takes on. She also manages to avoid some dead clone tropes and dead or dying AI tropes while she entertains. This novel (and series) were done well and the characters pop with personality. Loved it!

I couldn’t put Velocity Weapon down for days and it very much interfered with my life (in a good way). This novel makes artificial intelligence a central theme but avoids the simplistic pitfall attraction of “what if AI goes evil”. Megan O’Keefe highlights what we see in real life: AI reflects the community in which it was created. The twists and turns in this novel are worthy of the world’s best roller coasters, and it’s impossible not to root for Sanda and Biran Greeves, siblings separated during an interplanetary conflict. Megan also drops little easter eggs into her novel (I particularly love the reference to Ada Lovelace in the planet named Ada Prime). If you want a novel that keeps you guessing, this is the one for you!

As a child, I lived in a small valley sheltered from the night city lights. I could see the stars, and from that time, that is where my imagination dwelled. As a teenager, I read several of the books I have listed here, and from that point, I was inspired to read more and also to write myself. I sincerely believe that despite our current problems, humanity will outlive its troubled childhood and reach for the stars. We are destined for the stars, and only in the works of science fiction writers is that future explored. The books below helped me to become a successful author in my own right.
