Why am I passionate about this?

Having managed to convert a passion for shopping and curiosity about digital technologies into a 25-year-long career as a journalist and publisher, and analyst and research director latterly, I’m lucky to have been able to bring my knowledge and experience to bear in advising retailers and their technology providers on strategy and best practice. So, it was a natural progression for me and my co-author to research and dissect their biggest disruptor, Amazon, as a subject for our own book. The books I’ve recommended here are some of those I felt really helped me understand the dynamics shaping today’s shopping experiences and their impact on the wider world we live in.

The books I picked & why

Book cover of The Everything Store: Jeff Bezos and the Age of Amazon

Miya Knights Why did I love this book?

If the book about Amazon I co-authored is about the digital technology smarts and business strategy that has propelled the company to its dominant position, then Stone’s book is the perfect counterpoint, examining the ethos and culture of Amazon established by its founder and chairman, Jeff Bezos. It is essential reading for anyone wanting to better understand the company’s evolution and success.

The book is divided into five sections: the first part provides an overview of the field in general; the second deals with the problem of retrieval; the third part examines the control of health costs; the fourth focuses on medical decision support;…

Book cover of Makeover: How Mobile Flipped the Shopping Cart

Miya Knights Why did I love this book?

If Amazon has revolutionised commerce by making it easy for us to shop online, Makeover is the best book written yet on what this means for the physical shopping experience and traditional brick-and-mortar retail store or mall. It examines the changing dynamics of retailers’ business and consumer relationships while showing how mobile is transforming those relationships and the ways in which retail can and must adapt to thrive.

Book cover of The Mall

Miya Knights Why did I love this book?

I love the fact this book was the first in a series of spooky stories that takes you into the shopping mall when the shutters are down and lights are off. It’ll make sure you never see shopping in a mall the same again. The ‘author’ is actually a partnership between a crime novelist and a holder of a post-religious apocalyptic fiction doctorate.
