Book cover of Mrs. Dalloway

Richard W. Wise ❤️ loved this book because...

Virginia Wolf's Mrs. Dalloway is the perfect book for writers interested in the mastery of the stream of consciousness style. Executed by Wolf, the narrative provided a level of intimacy so difficult to achieve in narrative writing particularly when the character is so far removed either historically or culturallly.

What is this book about?

The working title of Mrs. Dalloway was The Hours. The novel began as two short stories, "Mrs. Dalloway in Bond Street" and the unfinished "The Prime Minister". It describes Clarissa's preparations for a party she will host in the evening, and the ensuing party. With an interior perspective, the story travels forward and back in time and in and out of the characters' minds to construct an image of Clarissa's life and of the inter-war social structure.

In October 2005, Mrs. Dalloway was included on Time's list of the 100 best English-language novels written since Time debuted in 1923.

Book cover of The Dawn of Everything: A New History of Humanity

Richard W. Wise ❤️ loved this book because...

Definitely a new and radical analysis of political history. The authors challenge the linear theory of political development. First, there were hunter-gatherers then herdsmen and farmers and humanity never backpedaled.

Historians/Anthropologists are beginning to question the Hobbesian assumption that life among the earliest hunter/gatherer societies was: "nasty, brutal and short". Rather, these early groups led a life of leisure compared to that of their successors, the farmers.

In one respect, history is the story of groups of small elites--made up of kings, warriors and priests---exploiting everyone else. Quoting Rousseau: "man is born free but is everywhere in chains," they ask the question why. Why the rush into shackles? Was this inevitable? Incredibly provocative!

What is this book about?

INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

A dramatically new understanding of human history, challenging our most fundamental assumptions about social evolution—from the development of agriculture and cities to the origins of the state, democracy, and inequality—and revealing new possibilities for human emancipation.

For generations, our remote ancestors have been cast as primitive and childlike—either free and equal innocents, or thuggish and warlike. Civilization, we are told, could be achieved only by sacrificing those original freedoms or, alternatively, by taming our baser instincts. David Graeber and David Wengrow show how such theories first emerged in the eighteenth century as a conservative reaction…

The Neanderthals, a pale-skinned people, occupied Ice Age Europe for three hundred thousand years. Dark-skinned Cro-Magnons, our direct ancestors, appeared forty-five thousand years ago. Five thousand years later, the Neanderthals had disappeared. What happened when our two ancestral peoples came face to face on the ice-bound plains of prehistory?
