My favorite read in 2024…

Book cover of Project Hail Mary

Erica Damon I ❤️ loved this book because...

As I tell everyone I recommend this one to, I went in blind and it was quite a ride. I did not expect many twists in a sci-fi book, but it kept the thriller-lover in me on my toes waiting to see how things would turn out. I love books with small casts where we get deeply into the mindset of the main characters, and this was just that. I can't cay much without spoiling it, but I'm not even a sci-fi reader and this book flew to the top of my favorites list.

What is this book about?

Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission—and if he fails, humanity and the earth itself will perish.

Except that right now, he doesn’t know that. He can’t even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it.

All he knows is that he’s been asleep for a very, very long time. And he’s just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

His crewmates dead, his memories fuzzily returning, Ryland realizes that an impossible task now confronts him. Hurtling through…

My 2nd favorite read in 2024…

Book cover of Hidden Pictures

Erica Damon I ❤️ loved this book because...

I didn't even know supernatural thrillers existed until I picked up Hidden Pictures and got both the spooky bits and the twisty bits I love in a story inside one book. It totally inspired the novel I was working on at the time (where I had ideas to combine the two, but was hesitant to try). I really enjoyed the addition of the actual pictures, that added a whole extra layer of creepiness to the story and isn't something I've seen much in adult fiction. This book was eye opening for me, in genre and format and on top of loving the story it was hugely motivational for me as a writer to try new things and follow the story, not just genre expectations.

My 3rd favorite read in 2024…

Book cover of What Feasts at Night

Erica Damon I ❤️ loved this book because...

Last year I was in love with What Moves the Dead and this year What Feasts at Night was a must read and it did not disappoint. I love the way the author deals with the character of Easton in an effortlessly inclusive way. You don't need to have read the first book, but the characters are back and stuck in a new nightmare. I loved the gothic horror, slow simmering dread that we get from this book, it's short but it packs a punch. while the first book was a retelling of Poe this one is a take on the Mara legend and I really enjoyed how various versions of the story were melded into this world. It fit so well that there was no doubting a moment of the spookiness. Which is something I hope to achieve in my writing. I didn't set out to read books that would help my own stories, but those books found me and this was one of them. The authors solid belief in their world shines through and makes the experience feel real and grounded. I hope there are more Sworn Soldier books to come!

A House in Shadow

By Erica Damon,

Book cover of A House in Shadow

What is my book about?

Perfect house. Perfect family. But looks can be deceiving.

392 Chapman Drive is not the house Tristan and Allison had hoped for. It was supposed to be the idyllic place to raise their daughter away from the bustle of the city, but all too soon, the house shows a sinister side, twisting Tristan’s world into a waking nightmare.

Allison doesn’t believe him; their daughter may or may not be in danger, and he can’t shake the feeling that there's more to all of this. Phantom knocks, figures who aren’t who they seem, doors that don’t lead where they should… could it all be in his head?
