My favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of What Moves the Dead

Erica Damon Why did I love this book?

This slow-burn, creeping suspicion horror was so atmospheric that the growing dread kind of snuck up on me. I love a retelling and who doesn’t love Poe?

The voice in this story was really clear and the characters quickly felt real (especially Hob, the horse - I am a sucker for a well-written equine companion!). I blew through this book in only a few sessions, which for me is unheard of. But I had to keep turning pages well into the night, even as the details made my skin itch. I’ll never look at mushrooms the same way again.

My 2nd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of Malice House

Erica Damon Why did I love this book?

This book! It was a hard call to put this one second, but ultimately I recommend the first book to more folks. But Malice House was perfectly creepy, with some of my favorite monsters ever. Pinchy.

I will never get over Pinchy! The twists in this book were spot on. The way it blends the line between thriller and supernatural horror was so much fun that I didn’t want the story to end. I would have happily kept reading this book for hundreds more pages.

My 3rd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of 14 Ways to Die

Erica Damon Why did I love this book?

14 Ways to Die was straight up fun. I haven’t read a lot of YA thrillers, but I loved the way it played with social media use and how we can use various platforms for our own needs.

I also loved the cat-and-mouse aspect with the killer and for as dark as some of the content was, it was fast-paced and had me looking around each corner for the next twist. You can’t go wrong with a good bad-guy and this book definitely nailed it!
