Book cover of The End of Time

Cally Oldershaw Why did I love this book?

There are many books about refugees and their stories, but for me, this is the book that really helped me empathize with and understand the plight of those who choose to leave their homes and sometimes their families in the hope of finding a better life. This is the book I keep thinking back to, dwelling on the characters and wondering about how their lives might have panned out and how I might have coped in a similar situation.

The story is told through the eyes of two young brothers who undertake the ordeal without their parents. This adds emotions such as fear, hope, surprise, and joy to the usual angst felt by boys as they change from children and take on the responsibilities of young adults. It's a great read.

What is this book about?

The Richard & Judy author returns with what is going to be the most talked about book of Summer 2019!

'I loved #TheEndofTime. It is, without doubt, one of my top reads of 2019. I walked every mile with Zain, Mohammed and Jesus. Even when their epic journey seemed hopeless, their story remained hopeful. I've not had such an immersive and important read in a long time.' Carmel Harrington

'Thoroughly enjoyed #TheEndOfTime. It's an epic story of brotherly love, courage and resilience. A sensitively-written, compassionate and heart-warming must-read for this summer.' Sarah J Harris

Book cover of All the Light We Cannot See

Cally Oldershaw Why did I love this book?

I loved this book mainly for its characters but also for the way that the story portrayed historical events from both sides of the conflict and the effect of war on people and their beliefs. The relationship between the caring father and blind daughter brought tears to my eyes, and his use of models to help her understand her neighborhood was inspired.

As the former curator of gemstones at the Natural History Museum in London, the story about a lost, missing or fake diamond from the Paris Museum of Natural History was captivating. Months after finishing the book, I still wonder about museum collections during times of war and think about which gemstones I would choose to save and what risks I would take to do so.

Book cover of Hothouse Earth: An Inhabitant’s Guide

Cally Oldershaw Why did I love this book?

I love this book because it says it all. As a professional geologist, I have had many discussions with friends and colleagues about the possibility of climate change, and this book explains the science clearly and simply. It is so well-researched and written that now I need only say, “Read the book.”

Bill McGuire, Professor of Geophysical and Climate Hazards at University College London paints a picture of the future of planet Earth that scares me—a future of increased extreme weather events, including floods, fires, and heat waves, and that is just in our lifetime. It is the book that, with my children in mind, encourages me, and I hope each one of Earth’s inhabitants will do something for the future of our planet.

What is this book about?

'It's a paradox but this was one of the most chilling books I've read this year. It's the definitive guide to where we're heading' ANTHONY HOROWITZ

'The Earth is already in a dangerous phase of heating. Many scientists admit privately to actually being "scared" by recent weather extremes. But the public doesn't like pessimism, so we environment journalists hint at future optimism. This book provides a more steely-eyed view on how we can cope with a hothouse world.' - ROGER HARRABIN, former BBC Environment Analyst

Stones: A Material and Cultural History

By Cally Oldershaw,

Book cover of Stones: A Material and Cultural History

What is my book about?

I wrote this because I love pebbles, stones, rocks, and especially sparkly gemstones.

My book is about the amazing impact and importance of stones in our history and culture from the Stone Age to the present day. From small beach pebbles to huge megaliths, stones have been collected, revered, enhanced, sculpted, or engraved for practical and artistic purposes.

I wanted to do something new and cover the aesthetic appeal, diversity and beauty, practical uses, and metaphysical properties as well as the science. So, I chose some of my favorite stone facts, myths, and stories to give readers an introduction to this vast topic. Standing stones, building stones, game counters, stone money, and cooking stones are just a few of my favorite examples.

Book cover of Paddington

Cally Oldershaw Why did they love this book?

This has been his favorite since he received it as a gift on his first birthday. Since then, he has requested it over and over again each night until he falls asleep. He loves the narrative's conversational style and enjoys the humour in each of the 'sticky' situations that Paddington gets himself into.

What is this book about?

The very first, classic Paddington picture book, with updated art from the original artist.

Nearly fifty years ago, a small bear from Darkest Peru set out on an adventure of a lifetime. With nothing but a suitcase, several jars of marmalade, and a label around his neck that read, "Please Look After This Bear," he stowed away on a ship headed for faraway England. When the little bear arrived at London's busy Paddington Station, he was discovered by Mr. and Mrs. Brown. As luck would have it, the Browns were just the sort of people to welcome a lost bear…

The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett is a magical novel for adults and children alike
