What a title for a book! I love it and the concept within. Learning to tie should be fun and what could be more fun than learning to tie your shoelaces and then getting up to do a jig. Plus a smiling fiddle player and happy dancers on each page are sure to bring a smile to your child’s face. Most importantly, this book was written by a doctor so parents can feel safe following his instructions.

This Little Golden Book was published 25 years ago. There have always been children struggling to tie their shoelaces. This one sends a good message about not giving up and practicing. It also reveals that you can’t always tell when someone is struggling with an issue just by looking at them. Stephen, the main character in the book struggles to learn. Children will be able to easily relate to him.

This is the only other picture book, besides my own, that I’ve been able to find for learning how to tie a necktie. It is a sweet story about a father figure coach who teaches a fatherless boy an art on manhood. I love books that teach values along with practical things so I had to place this story on my list.

Everyone who knows me knows I’m partial to rabbits and foxes and cute little woodland creatures in instructional children's picture books. This book doesn’t have any of that stuff in it. In fact, it doesn’t even have any demonstrations! But it is an interesting book and it’s full of mathematical equations that geeks love. The author Lord Falcon Redclaw Hamstercuddles gives lots ofhard, solid data that he promises will have you tying laces like a pro. Lord Falcon Redclaw Hamstercuddles? What kind of name is that? Well, it’s not his real name. Whatever that is will forever remain a mystery.

This book is the first in A.L. Jackson’s Bleeding Stars series and I can’t say enough about how much I love it. Two very broken people, Sebastian Stone and Shea Bentley, kept me on the ledge, knots tight in my stomach, waiting for their story to unfold. Jackson does an amazing job at building the depths of these characters and developing the consuming, can’t-live-without, love affair. I’m a true sucker for a story that is gut-wrenchingly beautiful. Both the characters have deep secrets, but Shea shows great courage and control over her life which I admire. Quick disclaimer: Jackson leaves a major cliffhanger so be ready to read book 2!

I’ve always had an interest in art, growing up a military brat and constantly moving, left me time to doodle and read. I spent the first part of my life as an art professor and artist. I began writing three years ago when my manuscript was chosen for RWA’s Ramp program in 2021. With my art, my interest leans more towards the bizarre and unexplained. I believe the romance stories I write follow suit, dark and gothic romance my primary interest, but always with spiritual and hopeful undertones. Skye Warren is one of my favorite romance authors. HerEndgame Trilogygot me hooked on romance. However, I love Wanderlust even more.
It chronicles the story of a budding photographer who leaves her overbearing mother to work in another city. On her way there, a trucker kidnaps and holds her in the back of his truck as they cross the country. This book has a similar theme as my book and some of the others I've listed and deals with captivity and power.
I've read this book several times, once as a reader and then as a writer, analyzing how to transform a morally gray character or someone despicable into someone readers could care about. Turning hatred for an abductor into pity and wanting him to be with the heroine is no easy feat. I'm still impressed with her skill.

I’ve found kids to be interested in difficult topics - like stealing, racism, inequality, environmental catastrophe to name a few! But I don’t want to lecture or frighten them about their future. I believe picture books can tell a story about things going awry but coming right again through a good idea, or act of kindness or a magic wand or the intervention of fate. When the story unfolds in the comfort and security of a carer’s lap or a safe classroom and there are accompanying pictures of absorbing detail that communicate the artist’s emotion and humor I think you provide universal foundation blocks for a good life.
Like all my previous choices this book is written and illustrated by the same person which I think allows a very subtle dance between words and pictures in the storytelling.

There are dramatic panoramas of canyons and mountains hideouts juxtaposed with close-ups of Calico, then Stewy Stinker, and his gang of Bad Men. I was such a die-hard fan of Santa Claus as a kid, my mom had to debunk the myth two years in a row! Because, yeah, I heard you, but surely that was a bad attempt at humor last year. I won’t lie. It was traumatic. I wrote this book as a way to ease kids into the knowledge without anyone in the family feeling bad about it. It puts a great positive spin on this childhood rite of passage and empowers kids to get the info when they’re ready for it.
