Henderson House Paperback – August 1, 2023
Purchase options and add-ons
"Like a love song to my Oklahoma roots. Henderson House offers a sweet window into a past when lives and loves moved to the gentle rhythm of small-town cafes, front porch swings, and old two-lane highways." — Lisa Wingate, New York Times bestselling author of Before We Were Yours
In May 1941, Bartlesville, Oklahoma, hums with talk of spring flowers, fishing derbies, and the growing war in Europe. And for the Blackwell sisters, who reside in a quiet neighborhood boarding house, the winds of change are blowing.
Bessie Blackwell, copy room manager at Phillips Petroleum and faithful churchgoer, is the reluctant owner of a new pair of glasses. The young women in the office swear by Bessie's romantic advice, despite the fact she's a self-proclaimed spinster. Frank Davis, Henderson House’s newest tenant, throws that status into question with his gentle eyes and ready smile. But the scar on his forehead and rumors of divorce speak of a troubled past.
Bessie’s sister, Florence, a sales assistant at the men's clothing store downtown, knows all about troubled pasts. Her husband is dead, and it’s only with her sister's help that she’s able to raise Johnny. Life at Henderson House is luxurious compared to growing up in Cherokee Indian Territory, but Florence wants more for her boy than a rented room. When the flagship store in Tulsa offers her a management position, Florence sets her sights on the future and keeping the family together. And neither future nor family includes Frank Davis.
Mrs. Henderson, the landlady, cook, and adopted matriarch of the Blackwell clan, possesses an uncanny intuition about all her boarders. She knows true love when she sees it. But soon even her vision becomes clouded as Florence schemes to undermine her sister’s budding romance. In a desperate attempt to keep Bessie by her side, Florence exposes the sisters' darkest secret. A secret that will change their lives, and the lives of those they love, forever.

Editorial Reviews
Review
"One of those rare novels that just makes you smile, [with] plenty of betrayals and secrets to keep you turning pages." —Addison Armstrong, author of The Light of Luna Park and The War Librarian
"In Henderson House, McVicker has created a world that is both cozy and yet brimming with dark secrets, the possibility of new love, and conflicting plans for the future. The very walls of the building buzz with the hopes and dreams of its variety of inhabitants, from sweet Bessie, to scheming Florence, to the mysterious new boarder, Frank Davis. Alive with small-town, 1940s details, readers will be charmed by this sweet story." —Juliette Fay, bestselling author of Catch Us When We Fall and The Half of It
"A charming novel about real people, flawed but lovable. Promises, heartbreaks, and betrayals are tenderly rendered, always with a dash of humor." —Kathryn Holzman, author of The Cost of Electricity and Real Estate: A Novel
"A heart-warming tale of lost love and seemingly never found family, faith, and the deep dark secrets we all keep. McVicker’s Henderson House is far more than it seems, as she bursts into the Romance world with her innovative debut novel. McVicker’s writing breathes life into the story, much like the Henderson House itself. A story virtually decades in the making, McVicker’s ability to paint a picture with words proves that some things are worth waiting for." —M.B. Lewis, author of the Award-Winning novel The Pilate Scroll

- Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2023I couldn’t put this book down and looked forward to reading every night!! I loved how the story was told from 3 different points of view. I loved the characters, especially Mrs. Henderson. She was truly the glue that kept everyone together. I believe in seeing peoples colors- i think we can all feel them but only a few are lucky enough to see them. I also loved how the house hummed when it was happy! I believe in the energy of our homes and it was so fun to see it come to life in Henderson House. I really didn’t want this story to end!! Maybe there will be a sequel and Johnny will find he birth dad! Thank you Caren for this loving and heartfelt read!! Well done!!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 11, 2024Do you ever read a book (or listen on audio) and get lost in it because it feels so real? This book is historical fiction but it's about a special house and all the lives that live under it's roof. He narrators were perfection. They sounded legit from the time period and their characters age. I found myself smiling while listening to them. First off, old people are lovely. Mrs. Henderson is someone I would want in my own life. I loved that she was different and could see colors. I loved that she ran that boarding house and just knew who would be a good fit. Her dog Louie was a good character too. Secondly, Bessie is a sweet and shy lady. She reminds me of myself a bit. Glasses, quick to embarrass, a good friend, stutters slightly when flustered, and helps her friends when asked. I found it humorous when she said if she walks in the kitchen, something is bound to catch on fire. Thirdly....Florence. Oh Florence. One can understand her fear of losing her sister and feeling like family must stay together as is...but I did not like the scheming and trying to ruin her sisters true love. You can tell the sisters love each other so much and have a bond, even through it all. The scenes in the kitchen, dinner together at the boarding house, talk of life in a small town, the flowers, working as a woman in the 1940s and more...it just made for a good read.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 10, 2023I saw a note from Caren Simpson McVicker in one of my online book groups saying that she had written a book which would come out very soon. I loved the beautiful cover, and decided to pick it up when it was published. So glad I did! This is a lovely, thoughtful, and well-written book about a small town in Oklahoma in 1941, just before America entered WWII. The characters are well drawn and the story ambles along quietly, telling of their lives together. An intriguing, intricate plot unfolds and soon you are rooting for their happiness and witnessing the unfolding of an old secret which threatens to pull a family apart. I especially enjoyed the touches of magical realism throughout the narrative. Highly recommended reading!

- Reviewed in the United States on June 7, 2024The author tells the story of residents in an Oklahoma boarding house. The house itself seems to be enchanted. The stories of its inhabitants are well written and seem historically relevant. This book has a charm that I have missed in so many novels. Hats off to Ms. McVicker.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 21, 2024Mrs. Henderson owns a boarding house in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. She takes in a new boarder, Frank Davis. And he has taken a shine to the spinster, Bessie Blackwell. Florence, Bessie’s sister, is not happy about this new romance and she intends to stop it with a big secret.
Y’all know I love a book with family secrets. This one has a doozy! Not only that, it has family jealousy, a magical house and some pretty unique characters! Now, I am not going to lie, this is a bit too sweet for me. But, I did enjoy it. Maybe I am getting sweeter in my old age 😜
The narrator, Jenn Lee was wonderful. She had such a calming voice.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 30, 2024Henderson House is a good book, not great but good. The characters come to life for the reader. Unfortunately, the narrative doesn't. It is slow so it takes a very patient reader to get to the real heart of the novel. If you want a slow but well-written novel, you will enjoy.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 5, 2024Set in Oklahoma a pair of sisters of overcame their turbulent upbringing. This is a very excellent read and kept my attention to the end. I have suggested this book to many of my friends. Cheers to The author on her first book. I can not wait to read the next one!
