As a middle grade horror writer, I attribute my love of everything spooky to my early obsession with reading. Of course, my little brain was twisted already, but I found a perfect home in the monsters and ghouls of the library. These are the five books that inspired me to become a writer who scares children in the best possible way.
This series was the most banned in the 1990s, or as my niece calls it, “the nineteen hundreds,” because she likes to make me feel old.
They are a beautiful, horrifying collection of spooky folktales and urban myths. Each one carefully researched and wonderfully written by Alvin Schwartz. The books were checked out so many times from the library their spines split. If the stories don’t make you wet the bed, the amazing illustrations by Stephen Gammell will.

The perfect teen horror book doesn’t exist…oh wait, yes it does. Unlike the others, I read this as an adult, but wow! This was a huge influence on my horror book, with its scenes of living in a cemetery.
Gaiman paints certain evil things as beautiful and worthy of redemption, and I appreciate that. A murderer on the loose, a boy living in a cemetery with ghosts, and all manner of monsters lurking in the pages. It’s a gorgeous book and deserves that Newberry Medal on the cover.

These fall more in the young adult world rather than middle grade because of the sexual situations. With that being said, I totally devoured them in middle school.
In my opinion, there is no greater master of the end of chapter cliffhanger than R.L. Stine, which keeps you frantically turning the page waaaaay after lights out. I carried these books around with me in my grandmother’s huge makeup case like my spooky book security blanket. And yes, my family was concerned.

It’s extremely well-written and appropriately spooky. Not only that, but I met this author. She came to my elementary school and spoke to us. Much to my surprise, she was a sweet, normal, real-life person. I figured if she could give my classmates nightmares, surely, I could too.

What I love about this book, and the movie made in the “nineteen hundreds”, is it respected the readers. It told us a frightening story and trusted us to be able to process it. Like all the books on this list, the authors didn’t treat us like kids. They treated us like readers, and that’s the best thing a writer can do for their fans.
