Why am I passionate about this?

As an author for both adults (Eli) and children (McGee and Me), I’ve sold over 8 million books and videos. My passion is to strip away the religious varnish we’ve coated God in and reveal him as the loving friend and father he longs to be. My first agenda is to entertain, and I never want to get caught preaching. Instead, I use humor and page-turning stories to present his love in ways without ever getting caught.

The books I picked & why

Book cover of A Testament of Devotion

Bill Myers Why did I love this book?

I love this book because it discusses how we can experience God more deeply in everyday language. It’s not preachy and not “religious.” In fact, one of my favorite quotes from it is: “Religion as a dull habit is not what Christ lived and died for.” The essays are simple, profound and life changing.

By Thomas Kelly,

Why should I read it?

1 author picked A Testament of Devotion as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

Since its first publication in 1941, A Testament of Devotion, by the renowned Quaker teacher Thomas Kelly, has been universally embraced as a truly enduring spiritual classic. Plainspoken and deeply inspirational, it gathers together five compelling essays that urge us to center our lives on God's presence, to find quiet and stillness within modern life, and to discover the deeply satisfying and lasting peace of the inner spiritual journey. As relevant today as it was a half-century ago, A Testament of Devotion is the ideal companion to that highest of all human arts-the lifelong conversation between God and his creatures.…

Book cover of The Magician's Nephew

Bill Myers Why did I love this book?

I love imagination and Christian-themed books that don’t preach. This one is both. It leads you to think without spoon-feeding doctrine. The characters are real (for fantasy) and are not merely tools to propel a plot or theme. Sadly, I didn’t read them until I was an adult and finished my own fantasy series. I wish I had. Reading them as a child would have been such a delight.

Book cover of The Complete Stories

Bill Myers Why did I love this book?

Although Flannery O’Connor can sometimes be dark and violent, her themes are deeply human, often showing the need for Christ’s hand of redemption. In this book, I see, among other things, the mystery of a religious philosophy versus the incarnate presence of God. But her craft is so developed that you never feel you are reading a philosophical debate or a religious sermon.

What is this book about?

Winner of the National Book Award

The publication of this extraordinary volume firmly established Flannery O'Connor's monumental contribution to American fiction.

There are thirty-one stories here in all, including twelve that do not appear in the only two story collections O'Connor put together in her short lifetime--Everything That Rises Must Converge and A Good Man Is Hard to Find.

O'Connor published her first story, "The Geranium," in 1946, while she was working on her master's degree at the University of Iowa. Arranged chronologically, this collection shows that her last story, "Judgement Day"--sent to her publisher shortly before her death―is a…

Book cover of The Complete Works of George Herbert

Bill Myers Why did I love this book?

I read poetry to constantly improve my writing craft—so many profound thoughts in so few words. In my estimation, George Herbert is the best. I return to his poetry repeatedly (often to the same poems) for further insights into my ever-deepening relationship with God.

Why should I read it?

1 author picked The Complete Works of George Herbert as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

George Herbert's prose and poetry is united in this combined volume, illustrating in detail the inner conflict the author felt regarding the principles of his faith and belief in God.

Coming of age during the early 17th century, Herbert demonstrated a great appetite for intellectual endeavors while still a boy. While still in his twenties, he mastered Greek and Latin and was elected to the post of Public Orator at Trinity College, Cambridge. His theological knowledge and scholarly ability distinguished him from many of his peers.

Throughout his life, Herbert suffered with physical infirmity and was never blessed with a…

Why am I passionate about this?

In a previous career, I traveled extensively to many parts of the world. I always found new cultures, old traditions, strange languages, and exotic environments fascinating. Perhaps even more fascinating, were the expats I found who had traded in their home country for an existence far from where they were born and different from how they were reared. In many instances, I’ve attempted to incorporate—in Heinlein’s words—this stranger in a strange land motif in my work. It always seems to heighten my interest. I hope the reader’s as well.
