My favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of The Child of Auschwitz

Valerie Green Why did I love this book?

This book left a deep emotional impact on me. Many times, it reduced me to tears so be sure to have a box of tissues handy as you read it.

Lily Graham’s heart-breaking, descriptive passages of life in Auschwitz and the fact that anyone, let alone a child born into that horror, could survive, were beyond remarkable.

Graham shows us strong characters like Eva, Sofie, and Helga, who by helping one another and coming together, managed to get through the worst things that could ever happen to a human being. This is a story that should be read by all generations to ensure that such horrendous things can never ever happen again.

What is this book about?

For readers of Lilac Girls and The Tattooist of Auschwitz, a heartbreaking story of survival, where life or death relies on the smallest chance and happiness can be found in the darkest times.

It is 1942 and Eva Adami has boarded a train to Auschwitz. Barely able to breathe due to the press of bodies and exhausted from standing up for two days, she can think only of her longed-for reunion with her husband Michal, who was sent there six months earlier.

But when Eva arrives at Auschwitz, there is no sign of Michal and the stark reality of the…

Book cover of Someday I'll Find You

Valerie Green Why did I love this book?

I am a great fan of historical fiction and stories set in WW1 and WW2.

This book is an enthralling novel set in World War 2 and tells the story of an English/Canadian Airforce pilot and a Norwegian female spy who meet during the London blitz, quickly fall in love, and then are torn apart a few days later to fight their own wars in different parts of the world.

Billy Coke and Isle Magnusson’s stories are a completely different take on the usual WW2 stories, and I particularly enjoyed reading about a lesser-known history of the decadent days of pre-war Berlin, and then later life under German occupation in Oslo. Billy and Isle’s stories will linger in your heart long after you reach the last page.

More importantly, this book gives its readers a richer understanding of a generation that lived and died for a better future for us today.

My 3rd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of The It Girl

Valerie Green Why did I love this book?

I love a good mystery, so I often turn to this author for an enjoyable read. Her Agatha Christie-type mysteries never disappoint and The It Girl is no exception.

This story is set at university in Oxford, England, where Hannah Jones first meets roommate April Clarke-Cliveden, the ultimate “it” girl with a vivacious, outgoing personality. The two girls easily make friends, and their group includes Hugh, Ryan, Will, and Emily. But, by the end of the first term, April is found dead. Who among them would murder her?

Was it really the somewhat creepy porter, John Neville, who was found guilty and sent to prison? Ten years later we meet the characters again after Neville dies in prison and a whole new investigation begins. This is a great read.

'Deliciously dark and utterly addictive - my favourite Ruth Ware yet' LUCY FOLEY

Everyone wanted her life
Someone wanted her dead

It was Hannah who found April's body ten years ago.
It was Hannah who didn't question what she saw that day.
Did her testimony put an innocent man in prison?

She needs to know the truth.

Even if it means questioning her own friends.
Even if it means putting her own life at risk.

Because if the killer wasn't…

Providence

By Valerie Green,

Book cover of Providence

What is my book about?

Providence, Book One in The McBride Chronicles (1840s-1871) describes the sweeping story of two parallel lives – Jane Hopkins, an orphaned young girl from England, and Gideon McBride, the son of a poor fisherman from Scotland – who separately travel to the New World in search of a better life. Their individual stories contain hardship, adventure, gold rushes, gambling, intrigue, deception, and lies, but, above all, a great love as they each find their way to survive in an unforgiving world – Jane through music and a desperate need for a happy family life, and Gideon through a desire to escape from a lifestyle he was expected to embrace.

The book depicts the strength and determination of early settlers and both the moral and corrupt days of early colonization.
