Book cover of Fairy Tale

Laurel McHargue Why did I love this book?

I love fantasy worlds. Fairy Tale took me to unimaginable places with characters so bizarrely unique that each new encounter left me amused and astonished! And who wouldn’t love a story about a boy wanting to save an old dog?

This Stephen King book is unlike any of his others, so don’t expect to be horrified. Expect, instead, to be carried along on a challenging adventure that never quits. Yes, there are monsters, but the focus is on how Charlie is able to meet them all and somehow remain alive—and changed—by the end of the story.

King brings old fairy tales into play in this memorable recreation of a fairy tale for the ages. As a bonus, the narrator is exceptional!

What is this book about?

A #1 New York Times Bestseller and New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice!

Legendary storyteller Stephen King goes into the deepest well of his imagination in this spellbinding novel about a seventeen-year-old boy who inherits the keys to a parallel world where good and evil are at war, and the stakes could not be higher—for that world or ours.

Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a hit-and-run accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad…

My 2nd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of Demon Copperhead

Laurel McHargue Why did I love this book?

Wow. Kingsolver’s character Demon, a boy in the foster care system, dragged me through the horrible realities of life as an outcast.

I loved this book because it taught me about a world I knew little about. It made me feel rage and sorrow and ultimately, hope. Told from Demon’s perspective, I got to experience everything he believed and felt.

I was constantly amazed by his acceptance of the unpleasant situations he found himself in and his depth of compassion for others going through personal struggles. Demon is a character who can teach everyone ready something important.

The narrator of the audiobook is outstanding.

What is this book about?

Demon's story begins with his traumatic birth to a single mother in a single-wide trailer, looking 'like a little blue prizefighter.' For the life ahead of him he would need all of that fighting spirit, along with buckets of charm, a quick wit, and some unexpected talents, legal and otherwise.

In the southern Appalachian Mountains of Virginia, poverty isn't an idea, it's as natural as the grass grows. For a generation growing up in this world, at the heart of the modern opioid crisis, addiction isn't an abstraction, it's neighbours, parents, and friends. 'Family' could mean love, or reluctant foster…

My 3rd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of Where the Crawdads Sing

Laurel McHargue Why did I love this book?

I love this book because the main character, Kya, overcomes hardships no child should have to endure.

Having to raise herself, she’s an outcast in society, yet she finds strength in her solitude and through her interactions with nature. As she matures, certain love interests provide intrigue.

A mysterious death—or was it murder?—kept me guessing until the end, and the ending is completely satisfying. All of the characters in this engaging story are people I know I’ve met over the years... the good ones and the not-so-good ones.

In a post-cataclysmic world threatened by stinking ooze, a brave girl searches for answers with the help of talking animals and evolving powers. When a mountain spirit challenges her to save the planet, she must overcome a magical, malicious castle of sand and a shapeshifter who wants her dead.
