Book cover of Extreme Ownership: How U.S. Navy Seals Lead and Win

Robert L Caslen Why did I love this book?

Coming from a military background, and having fought in Iraq a couple of times, and having personally known Jocko’s commander, I totally could relate to the environment he speaks about in his book.

But what makes his book so rewarding to read, is how he not only survived in this environment, but how he thrived in some of the most challenging circumstances any human being could find themselves. Jocko demonstrates what it takes to successfully lead in the crucible of ground combat, and he makes the key transition of how these leadership lessons apply to any other person who has made a personal decision to be a leader and lead.

By Jocko Willink, Leif Babin,

In Extreme Ownership, Jocko Willink and Leif Babin share hard-hitting, Navy SEAL combat stories that translate into lessons for business and life. With riveting first-hand accounts of making high-pressure decisions as Navy SEAL battlefield leaders, this book is equally gripping for leaders who seek to dominate other arenas. Book cover of The Five Dysfunctions of a Team: A Leadership Fable

Robert L Caslen Why did I love this book?

I am fully convinced that the best leaders are the best team builders, and if you want to be a successful leader, then learn how to build teams. This book highlights Five common mistakes in team building.

What I like best is that not only does the author highlight the mistakes, but he teaches how best to overcome them. Although this book has been out for a number of years, if you are a leader, and you have not had the chance to read this book, then get it today and read it!

By Patrick M. Lencioni,

Why should I read it?

8 authors picked The Five Dysfunctions of a Team as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

In The Five Dysfunctions of a Team Patrick Lencioni once again offers a leadership fable that is as enthralling and instructive as his first two best-selling books, The Five Temptations of a CEO and The Four Obsessions of an Extraordinary Executive. This time, he turns his keen intellect and storytelling power to the fascinating, complex world of teams. Kathryn Petersen, Decision Tech's CEO, faces the ultimate leadership crisis: Uniting a team in such disarray that it threatens to bring down the entire company. Will she succeed? Will she be fired? Will the company fail? Lencioni's utterly gripping tale serves as…

Book cover of Bipolar General: My Forever War with Mental Illness

Robert L Caslen Why did I love this book?

I have known the author for about 20 years, and never realized he was struggling with mental health issues.

Since I too am a retired Army general officer, I can relate to the challenges and struggles Gregg Martin went through.  But Martin’s experiences are not just unique to senior Army officers, as they are prevalent among other senior strategic leaders in close-knit organizations and cultures.  It takes a lot of courage to come out and share with transparency, but that is the type of leader Gregg Martin is.

By Gregg F. Martin,

Why should I read it?

1 author picked Bipolar General as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

Maj. Gen. Gregg Martin cut a striking figure in the Army: athletic, quick witted, devout, and studious, he was a natural leader. Thanks to his engineering and leadership knowhow, Martin was chosen to lead the thousands of combat engineers who paved the way for 100,000 Army troops to battle their way to Baghdad in 2003. Martin was astonishing to watch as he led this effort, his mind laser focused and body vibrating with energy. He made quick decisions, often anticipating and solving problems before orders came down. Only years later would he learn how the pressure of organizing dozens of…
