In Search of Mr Darcy: Lessons Learnt In The Pursuit of Happily Ever After

By Christina Ford,

Book cover of In Search of Mr Darcy: Lessons Learnt In The Pursuit of Happily Ever After

What is my book about?

My book is a hilarious Nora Ephron-style, unfiltered dating memoir that follows a woman through four decades of relationships amid life's messiest moments as she searches for Mr. Darcy. Yes, that elusive literary Prince Charming we have been all but promised since childhood.

This real-life Sex And The City-like journey explores the colorful, intimate story of marriage(s), divorce(s), affairs, friends, frenemies, addiction, body image, sexual predators, and the often thankless task of single-parenting and step-parenting. Filled with candid truths and valuable life lessons, it isn't just a book about love and loss; it's a survival guide for anyone navigating the treacherous waters of coming of age…middle age.

The books I picked & why

Book cover of Heartburn

Christina Ford Why did I love this book?

This book has the unique ability to make me laugh out loud. All the while, the heroine, seven months pregnant, learns her husband is cheating on her. Nora Ephron is a master of finding the humor in the darkest of life's messiest moments. And as she famously said, "Everything is copy,"

This book is made even more remarkable by its semi-autobiographical nature about Nora's marriage breakdown. It is a relatable story if anyone has gone through a breakup because it focuses on the moment when you realize that love for oneself is the most important thing. The dialogue is brilliant, honest, witty, and often touching. This is a great listen, too, as Meryl Streep narrates.

If I had to do it over again, I would have made a different kind of pie. The pie I threw at Mark made a terrific mess, but a blueberry pie would have been even better, since it would have permanently ruined his new blazer, the one he bought with Thelma ... Book cover of Calypso

Christina Ford Why did I love this book?

I only discovered David Sedaris' writings a couple of years ago, and already, I have pretty much read everything this man has scribbled. I love how he can take the tiniest moments, like a hotel elevator ride, and then blow it up into a hilarious life lesson.

His family sits at the center of his creative fodder, and his observations on life, death, and love are laugh-out-loud funny. This book is more than just a collection of essays; it is an artfully threaded story of the unique and sometimes complicated love he has for his family.

Book cover of Book Lovers

Christina Ford Why did I love this book?

I love a great, happily-ever-after love story that makes you work for it. And that is what this book does. It is not so much the groundbreaking story of boy meets girl—girl hates boy—and then girl finds she has misunderstood boy all along.

It's a little like Pride and Prejudice meets When Harry Met Sally. I love that this book does for me what a great rom-com does: you know how it is going to end, but you lean in and thoroughly enjoy the journey.

Book cover of Pride and Prejudice

Christina Ford Why did I love this book?

What is it about Jane Austen's Mr. Darcy and Miss Elizabeth Bennet that stand the test of time? O Magazine described it as the best romantic novel of all time, and I agree. It is not just Austen's beautiful prose that stays with you; I love each and every character, even if I loathe them.

I call this a literary, grown-up fairy tale, complete with the wealthy "prince" riding our heroine off to his splendid manor.

When King Priam's pregnant daughter was fleeing the sack of Troy, Stan was there. When Jesus of Nazareth was beaten and crucified, Stan was there - one crossover. He’s been a Hittite warrior, a Silk Road mercenary, a reluctant rebel in the Peasant’s Revolt of 1381, and an information peddler in the cabarets of post-war Berlin. Stan doesn't die, and he doesn't know why. And now he's being investigated for a horrific crime.

As Stan tells his story, from his origins as an Anatolian sheep farmer to his custody in a Toronto police interview room, he brings a wry, anachronistic perspective to three thousand years of Western history. Call Me Stan is a Biblical epic from the bleachers, a gender fluid operatic love quadrangle, and a touching exploration of what it is to outlive everyone you love.

Or almost everyone.
