Why read it?

10 authors picked Book Lovers as one of their favorite books. Why do they recommend it?

Emily Henry immediately captivates readers from the very first page. Her talent for writing sharp, witty dialogue is undeniable—honestly, it’s the kind of writing that makes me, as a writer, want to step up my game! What really stands out, though, is how she creates characters that are flawed and relatable.

Book Lovers is a heartfelt journey about two people who feel like life is going in one direction, only to discover that fate has a way of surprising them. It’s a beautifully crafted story about love, self-discovery, and the twists and turns that life throws at them.

This book made me laugh aloud. It was well-written and parodies some of the commonly used tropes in romance. To my delight, the smart, determined career woman gets a happy ending. If you love rom coms, you'll love this book!

I love a great, happily-ever-after love story that makes you work for it. And that is what this book does. It is not so much the groundbreaking story of boy meets girl—girl hates boy—and then girl finds she has misunderstood boy all along.

It's a little like Pride and Prejudice meets When Harry Met Sally. I love that this book does for me what a great rom-com does: you know how it is going to end, but you lean in and thoroughly enjoy the journey.

Book cover of The Pact

The Pact By Lisa Darcy,

The Pact is a contemporary fiction novel about Australian sisters, Samantha and Annie, who are doubles tennis champions. This story amplifies the usual sibling issues and explores their professional partnership and personal relationships – similarities, differences, motivation, competition, abandonment, and grief – and how they each respond to the stress…

I loved this book because it’s the only novel I’ve ever read during which I’ve said to myself, “I know these two are going to have a happy ending (the book is a romance, and the genre demands it), but I have absolutely no idea how they’re going to get there.”

I love Emily Henry’s prose, and the way it propels the story; I love the idea that the book is centered around the kind of woman who always gets left behind in Hallmark movies. And I love that the book is unapologetic when it asserts that the kind of…

From Jason's list on choosing joy.

This story was just so charming, funny, and full of romantic sweetness.

It’s a true book lover’s novel, and the interplay between the hero and heroine—both of whom work in the publishing industry—was filled with bookish references that were an utter delight for me as a longtime romance reader and writer. I found it to be a perfect beach read (or cozy winter read...), and the author’s writing style was so breezy and light, I couldn’t help but grin throughout.

My jaw actually hurt from smiling so much! Plus, witty dialogue wins me over every time, and this story has…

There are many reasons to adore this book. I love the twist on the ‘Hallmark’ romance. You know the story. A big-city girl or man has to visit their hometown or a small town, and they find love, leaving behind their mean big-city girlfriend or boyfriend. In Book Lovers, the main character is the ‘mean’ power-driven girlfriend who’s dumped.

Ironically, I am writing a small-town (standalone) romance series. But like Henry, I love to have a fresh twist. Book Lovers was laugh-out-loud, funny, sweet, and sexy, with a wonderful theme. I also love her (new?) trope. Forget grumpy vs.…

Book cover of Wrightsville Beach

Wrightsville Beach By Suzanne Goodwyn,

Two years ago, devastated by the sudden death of his older brother, Hank Atwater went on a drinking rampage that ended in his being arrested. Since then, he has been working to rebuild his reputation in his hometown of Wilmington, North Carolina, with little luck. But everything changes after a…

Emily Henry took the small-town trope in romance and flipped it on its head in this romantic comedy about two city slickers stuck in Sunshine Falls, North Carolina.

Complete with rescuing a small business, strengthening family ties, and finding enduring love, Henry manages to make this feel-good romp fresh and unique. A few laugh-out-loud moments made this story memorable and heartwarming. If you like small town romances, you’ll love this story.

The sisterly bond in this book and the hallmark parallels had me wanting to stay wrapped up in this cozy read as long as possible.

The mishaps along the way added a touch of humor that had me smiling as I read. And the interactions between ‘enemies turned lovers’ Nora and Charlie were great.

The coincidences that followed the main leads, like running into each other in a remote small town when both are from New York and didn’t know the other would be there and the fact Charlie’s mom owns the house Nora and her sister are renting made…

This is a bit of a twist on the hometown romance, because our heroine – Nora Stephens – is not a small-town girl, nor does she have any interest in being a small-town girl.

She is NYC through and through and loves her job as a literary agent there. Except when she’s forced to deal with that tight-ass editor Charlie Lastra. God, does she loathe the man.

Her sister, Libby, however doesn’t love Nora’s commitment to her job and city, which is why she insists on a girls’ trip to Sunshine Falls, NC, so Nora can focus less on work…

From E.F.'s list on homecoming (of sorts) romances.

How can banter be this sexy? Emily Henry’s characters jump off the page. A tough cynical self-described serial dumpee takes a trip to a small town only to find the one person grumpier than her. Nora is a hard case with a soft spot for her hilarious sister. She absolutely should not be attracted to her fellow book agent, but the sizzle is undeniable. It’s not just the kissy parts of this book that will melt your sheets. The reason I recommend the Hell out of this book is because the banter is just so so sexy. The way the…
