Book cover of The Crippled God

Tyler Krings ❤️ loved this book because...

The Crippled God is the end of a very long epic tale (the 10th novel and over 3 million total words by the authors admission in the forward) that begins with us finding the remnants of our favorite army of ragtag Malazans, the Bonehunters. Decimated after the events of the previous novel, we follow our heroes and their allies as they attempt to right the events of the ancient past in the face of impossible odds. The end was incredibly satisfying, filled with moments of humor, sadness, hope, loss, violence, heroics, and in the end, even music. This was one of those books that, when finished, I had to stand up and stare out the window longingly, thoughtfully, both satisfied and saddened that it was over.

    🐇 I couldn't put it down

By Steven Erikson,

Why should I read it?

2 authors picked The Crippled God as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

The climax to the epic Malazan Book of the Fallen series that will determine how the world is ruled.

Savaged by the K'Chain Nah'Ruk, the Bonehunters march for Kolanse, where waits an unknown fate. Tormented by questions, the army totters on the edge of mutiny, but Adjunct Tavore will not relent. One final act remains, if it is in her power, if she can hold her army together, if the shaky allegiances she has forged can survive all that is to come. A woman with no gifts of magic, deemed plain, unprepossessing, displaying nothing to instill loyalty or confidence, Tavore…

My 2nd favorite read in 2024

Book cover of Before They Are Hanged

Tyler Krings ❤️ loved this book because...

The second novel in the First Law Trilogy, Before They Are Hanged follows Logen Ninefingers, Jezal Dan Luthar, and my favorite sarcastic interrogator, San Dan Glokta on their various adventures in other parts of the world while all in service of The Union. Violent, unforgivingly brutal, while also often hilarious, the second novel in the trilogy is my favorite due to its focused character moments (there were plenty in all 3 novels but I liked these the most) and focus on action with a good dose of romance on the side. Highly recommend.

What is this book about?

'As brilliant as its predecessor' SF REVU

Bitter and merciless war is coming to the frozen north. It's bloody and dangerous and the Union army, split by politics and hamstrung by incompetence, is utterly unprepared for the slaughter that's coming. Lacking experience, training, and in some cases even weapons the army is scarcely equipped to repel Bethod's scouts, let alone the cream of his forces.

In the heat-ravaged south the Gurkish are massing to assault the city of Dagoska, defended by Inquisitor Glokta. The city is braced for the inevitable defeat and massacre to come, preparations are made to make…

My 3rd favorite read in 2024

Book cover of Rhythm of War

Tyler Krings ❤️ loved this book because...

The 4th novel of the stormlight archive and the series has yet to disappoint. The action is terrific, the lore and world are highly immersive. This entry is unique, however, in its focus on mental health particularly depression/anxiety and it's effects on soldiers fighting a long war. Inciteful, strong character moments, and sprawling military action make this novel into another strong addition to what is quickly becoming required reading for fans of modern fantasy.
