My 2nd favorite read in 2024

Book cover of Fairy Tale

Sammy Stein ❤️ loved this book because...

This book gripped me like no other in recent years. I had not read King for a while and thought I might find the plot predictable but it wasn't and King has a way in which he creates several story lines and works them together, so the reader learns about the characters, and relate to them and understand their motivation for actions. The reader is drawn in not just to the world of the main character, but in this case, to the lives of several people, each going through a different path and so much of this touches on reality, yet then veers off into complete but almost believable fantasy. The world beneath and the world above have remarkable similarities and while the science is impossible, King has there ader utterly convinced at the existence of a land beneath ours. A wonderful escape into the land of make believe. The characters have their complexities, their motivations, whether this is for good or evil and the underlying narrative is the battle of good and the darkness. King is superb in this book.

    🐇 I couldn't put it down

By Stephen King,

Why should I read it?

15 authors picked Fairy Tale as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

A #1 New York Times Bestseller and New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice!

Legendary storyteller Stephen King goes into the deepest well of his imagination in this spellbinding novel about a seventeen-year-old boy who inherits the keys to a parallel world where good and evil are at war, and the stakes could not be higher—for that world or ours.

Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a hit-and-run accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad…

My 3rd favorite read in 2024

Book cover of Holly

Sammy Stein ❤️ loved this book because...

King proves he is master of a different genre than Fairy Tale with his characters and their interwoven lives. The secrets held by the main character, her motivation to do right and find the perpetrators of henious crimes are well relayed to the reader. I read this book in spurts, becoming enveloped in the stories of the characters, then needing time to digest before picking the book ( and stories) up again. King's descriptive powers come to the fore here and it is this that draws the reader ever more into the world of Holly and her unrelenting search for truth.

By Stephen King,

Why should I read it?

13 authors picked Holly as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

Holly Gibney, one of Stephen King’s most compelling and ingeniously resourceful characters, returns in this thrilling novel to solve the gruesome truth behind multiple disappearances in a midwestern town.

“Sometimes the universe throws you a rope.” —BILL HODGES

Stephen King’s Holly marks the triumphant return of beloved King character Holly Gibney. Readers have witnessed Holly’s gradual transformation from a shy (but also brave and ethical) recluse in Mr. Mercedes to Bill Hodges’s partner in Finders Keepers to a full-fledged, smart, and occasionally tough private detective in The Outsider. In King’s new novel, Holly is on her own, and up against…

Don‘t forget about my book 😀

Candid

By Sammy Stein,

Book cover of Candid

What is my book about?

This book features over forty women and several men across various genres and roles. While the women provide firsthand accounts, the men offer outside perspectives, presenting a broader, unbiased look at industry dynamics.
With a foreword by composer Bushra El-Turk, the book reveals unsettling statistics from surveys, polls, and reports on gender discrimination, harassment, and under representation in music. it also reveals the positive moves that are happening to improve things - not least those instigated by men who, because the music industry seemingly ignores recommendations, have decided they do not want to continue missing out on almost fifty percent of musicians to work with due to entrenched.

The interviews create a dynamic (and sometimes very funny) conversation with the women answering questions (and raising more) on diversity and equality in the music industry and what can be done to further improve the situation. How do you cope with a guy who gets into your bunk on the trou bus, for example, or at a venue with no loo door in the dressing room? We meet rappers, rock guitarists, classical musicians, jazz musicians - Dame Evelyn Glennie, the trailblazing percussionist, managers, and advocates. This variety gives readers an eclectic, but well-rounded cross-section of voices.
Interview quotes are interwoven with research, providing both personal insight and a well-documented view of ongoing industry challenges.
One of the book’s standout elements according to one reviewer, is its inclusivity. It features perspectives from women who have faced sexism and others who report no negative experiences, though the latter are in the minority. A notable example is Saskhia Menendez, a trans woman who has experienced the industry from both gender perspectives and notes the marked difference in how she was treated.
Candid is refreshingly thorough, balancing personal testimonies with broader social context. Unlike other books on women in music, which often focus on either genre or gender, Candid merges both topics and covers a highly diverse range of voices. There is a section called 'Words of Wisdom' and two full length interviews with percussionists Phil Raskin and Dame Evelyn Glennie - both of whom have enjoyed decades-long success.
Candid is a vital read for anyone interested in understanding the music industry’s current landscape from an inclusive, multifaceted perspective. One reviewer has said " What I particularly like about Stein's writing is that she doesn't tell the reader what to think. Instead she juxtaposes many varied perspectives, quotes extensively from those she interviews and lets the evidence speak for itself; the effect is all the more powerful."
