Why read it?

I spent ten years as a computer game producer, so I loved this look at a world I knew something about. And it was refreshing to read a book about a friendship. We could use more of those!
Not quite a love story, but a tale of a male-female friendship and the endless chances it gets to one day blossom into something more. Even non-gamers will be drawn into the world of video game design as two childhood friends struggle to create something lasting. A moving and enjoyable read.
This isn't the type of book I'd usually read, but a friend strongly recommended it to me given its subject matter and that the main characters are nearly my age. The book also takes place in two cities where I've lived. So that got me reading. It's a well crafted story and an entertaining read. I think about several moments from the book today, months after I finished it. That's always a good sign.
the characters feel feel, emotions raw and the circumstances weave themselves together well. The threads of the individuals' stories come together to create a cohesive and well put together narrative.
This awesome story is jam packed with lyrical and brainy writing. Even if you don't gravitate toward digital games, like me, the characters will charm you into a fascination with them. The creative process detailed here is awesome. Best of all, each of the main characters are likable and unlikable. I found them human, believable, and beautiful in different ways.
I never ever would have thought a books that’s ostensibly about video games would grab me like
This but it did. Because it’s about friendship, conflict, youth, art, growing up and so much more.
This is one of the best things I have read in a long time. The story line, the characters, the setting and the "world" are all drawn marvellously, and it is just a joy to read. Sensationally good writing and a writer to follow.
Judging by the soggy mountain of tear-soaked tissues that piled up by my reading chair, this may be the most touching love story I've ever read. Maybe because it is not meant to be a love story. At least not in the traditional sense.
This is a story about friendship and partnership. It's about finding ways to connect, set free, and re-connect with the people that give our life meaning. It is about seeing and being seen. About being present for someone in their grief, and allowing others to do the same whether we think we want them there or…
I truly believe that video games are the art form that defines our present and, at least, our near-ish future. So, it was a great pleasure to encounter Zevin’s novel about the relationships behind a video game studio’s origins, which both elevates and scrutinizes the medium’s potential to revolutionize narrative storytelling.
Zevin deftly translates gaming's embodied perspective, including one stand-out moment in the back half that is perhaps the book’s defining triumph. Through her expansive prose, Sam, Sadie, and Marx play out their lives: their moments of intense and sometimes myopic creativity, their intricate interpersonal joys and devastations, and the…
From Lio's list on the transformative power of art.
