Book cover of Sula

Caroline Wolff ❤️ loved this book because...

This was only the second Toni Morrison book I've ever read, and after reading Sula, I'm inspired to read her entire ouevre. Her style is so original, and even though the subject matter is heavy and it goes to extremes of emotions, I still found that I breezed through it - I just wanted to see where Morrison would take us next. A mindblowing read that will stay with me for years to come.

What is this book about?

'Extravagantly beautiful... Enormously, achingly alive... A howl of love and rage, playful and funny as well as hard and bitter' New York Times

As young girls, Nel and Sula shared each other's secrets and dreams in the poor black mid-West of their childhood. Then Sula ran away to live her dreams and Nel got married.

Ten years later Sula returns and no one, least of all Nel, trusts her. Sula is a story of fear - the fear that traps us, justifying itself through perpetual myth and legend. Cast as a witch by the people who resent her strength, Sula…

Book cover of Romantic Comedy

Caroline Wolff ❤️ loved this book because...

Romantic Comedy proves that romance novels can be smart, sophisticated, and brilliantly written! I fell in love with Sally and Noah's love story. Sittenfeld is so skilled at conveying subtle emotions and thoughts, so I felt completely immersed in the world and character interiority. Plus, it's laugh out loud funny, and I love a good, old-fashioned happy ending.

My 3rd favorite read in 2024

Book cover of Demon Copperhead

Caroline Wolff ❤️ loved this book because...

I'm late to the Demon Copperhead game, but now I understand the hype. I'm floored by how Kingsolver immerses us so fully into Demon's voice and his world. It offered me an emotionally charged glimpse into a world that I (and many people) did not previously understand, which I think is the ultimate work of fiction - to create empathy.

By Barbara Kingsolver,

Why should I read it?

67 authors picked Demon Copperhead as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

Demon's story begins with his traumatic birth to a single mother in a single-wide trailer, looking 'like a little blue prizefighter.' For the life ahead of him he would need all of that fighting spirit, along with buckets of charm, a quick wit, and some unexpected talents, legal and otherwise.

In the southern Appalachian Mountains of Virginia, poverty isn't an idea, it's as natural as the grass grows. For a generation growing up in this world, at the heart of the modern opioid crisis, addiction isn't an abstraction, it's neighbours, parents, and friends. 'Family' could mean love, or reluctant foster…
