Book cover of Stolen Focus: Why You Can't Pay Attention—and How to Think Deeply Again

Havard Mela Why did I love this book?

This book is a collection of brilliant insights about how big tech has stolen our ability to concentrate.

I am very passionate about this topic since I have written a book about the subject and experienced being addicted to social media, YouTube, and other digital distractions and then managed to break free. I read the entire book in a few days, neglecting other things as I just couldn’t stop. It is a page-turner in the truest sense.

The writing is brilliant, and it was eye-opening to read about Hari’s experiment with a no-tech vacation and how his perspective and life experience changed because of it.

Book cover of Expert Secrets: The Underground Playbook for Converting Your Online Visitors Into Lifelong Customers

Havard Mela Why did I love this book?

This book is the best book I have read about online marketing. It changed my outlook on how to build a brand online, and I had numerous “Eureka!” moments throughout it.

Entrepreneurs like Russell Brunson or Alex Hermozi don’t write books to make money. They write books to market more expensive services. And, since they share so much value, some of their readers will buy more expensive products, which is the essential idea behind sales funnels.

Although it is very self-promotional, this book taught me invaluable lessons about how to sell your services and help people. After reading this book, I noticed that many brands I follow use strategies developed by Brunson to sell their products and build a following.

Book cover of Fooled by Randomness: The Hidden Role of Chance in Life and in the Markets

Havard Mela Why did I love this book?

This book contains a lot of gems about how statistics can be used and misunderstood.

I loved that the book illustrated a concept I have been pondering a lot myself: the importance of risk in our lives and survivorship bias. For instance, many successful people take many risks and are the survivors we see, while there may be a lot of people taking similar risks that we never hear about.

Taleb comes off as arrogant in this book but he holds himself to the same standards he judges others by. To me, it is extreme to the point of becoming an amusing character trait that makes the book entertaining.

What is this book about?

Everyone wants to succeed in life. But what causes some of us to be more successful than others? Is it really down to skill and strategy - or something altogether more unpredictable?

This book is the bestselling sensation that will change the way you think about business and the world. It is all about luck: more precisely, how we perceive luck in our personal and professional experiences. Nowhere is this more obvious than in the markets - we hear an entrepreneur has 'vision' or a trader is 'talented', but all too often their performance is down to chance rather than…

Digital Discipline: Choosing Life in the Digital Age of Excess

By Havard Mela,

Book cover of Digital Discipline: Choosing Life in the Digital Age of Excess

What is my book about?

As someone who has been addicted to online pleasures such as YouTube and social media and managed to break free, I have immersed myself in understanding how the big tech platforms capture our attention. Why is it so hard to avoid endless online distractions? How do you reclaim control of your attention and, ultimately, your life?

My book explores how to thrive in a world with increasingly addictive and time-consuming online distractions. Those who put digital discipline into practice will experience strengthened relationships, better health, increased productivity, and more time to pursue what matters the most.
