My favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of I Am Pilgrim

Gary Orleck Why did I love this book?

It was a powerful and gripping story of what could happen if a terrorist wanted to use serrigan to destroy an American city.

The main character was a super agent – James Bond without a gun as he used his wits to plow through the roadblocks put up by the evil villian (who was almost as smart as him – almost). I did not want this story to end, proven by the fact it took me 5 days to read the last 5 pages and I felt sad when  the story did come to end.

I did learn a lot about Saudi Arabia and most of it was negative but fortunately humanity did win out (thanks to Pilgrim). It was sad by virtue of what men could do to other men and how that feeds upon itself but it was a great read and I do highly recommend that you read it.

Mainly because it kept me engaged in each and every page and as the plot thickened I could not wait to get to the next page to find out what was going to happen. The story was original unlike anything that I read before and the main character became a person that you truly cared about more and more.

When he was in danger you felt like you were right there sharing the danger with him while praying it turned out well. A great story worth reading and one that you will not soon forget.

My 2nd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared

Gary Orleck Why did I love this book?

I never thought that I would find a person whose life I would trade mine for but the main character is definitely one that I would trade because his life was 10 times more interesting, more fascinating, more thrilling and definitely more eventful than mine.

He was a munitions expert who intertwined with the likes of Franco, Truman and even Stalin and Chairman Mao. I found this book to be a great cure for the blues, especially for anyone who might feel bad about growing old! It also keeps you amused almost non stop and that is something few books can do!

My 3rd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of The Godfather

Gary Orleck Why did I love this book?

I read it in 1969 when it first came out and recently decided I must re-read what I consider as the greatest novel ever written and the greatest gangster story ever told.

Even the second time around I could not wait to get to the next page to find out what was going to happen as it was that gripping of a story. You loved most of the characters even though they were not the most upstanding citizens, sometimes you actually found yourself rooting for them.

It has stories within the story and that keeps you attached to the characters and has many valuable life lessons. The story definitely stays with you , a unique accomplishment of the author.

Travels With Maurice: An Outrageous Adventure in Europe, 1968

By Gary Orleck,

Book cover of Travels With Maurice: An Outrageous Adventure in Europe, 1968

What is my book about?

Travels With Maurice is a gem of a book that just sneaks up on you with its greatness. While the title makes you think it’s a travelog or road trip book (and we’ve all read enough of these), Travels is so much more. The story begins with a toast in a bar to the news that an old friend has died; you're quickly drawn into the world of Gary Orleck, who did a simple favor for Maurice, a fellow student at Babson College, and then found his life changed in a way that he could've never foreseen.

This isn't a simple book. It's an invitation by Gary to the reader to go on a journey with him that isn’t measured in miles driven, but in years of life put down on page.
