My favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of The Cottingley Secret

Cindy Thomson Why did I love this book?

This book looks back to a simple act that had rippling effects. The historical thread is set in 1917, a dark time.

We sometimes forget people at the time didn’t know how the war would end and desperately needed hope. In this story, two young girls claim they photographed fairies, an innocent tale. But the two become famous when Sir Arthur Conan Doyles hears of it.

One hundred years later, a woman discovers the story and photograph and realizes that what is real and what is fantasy can intertwine today just as it had back then.

This story made me consider how easily people can be convinced of something they desperately want to believe. What if this seemingly impossible thing happened? How does that change how I view the world?

These questions kept me turning pages. This was a 5-star read for me.

Cindy Thomson Why did I love this book?

Three friends in three different traumatic settings during WWII find the strength they need to survive while serving others as nurses.

Not just about the horrors of war, although there is that, this novel explores relationships and how, when tested, they can endure. I love the different characters, each written by a different author.

It was completely engaging.

Book cover of The Extraordinary Deaths of Mrs. Kip

Cindy Thomson Why did I love this book?

Two women, one at the end of her life, and one just beginning to ponder how best to live hers, meet at this important crossroads.

The story of Mrs. Kipp, who is dying, is gradually revealed, and I grew to love and respect her as I read about the people she encountered during her life and how her life grew more meaningful each time. Her desire to pass on the legacy was endearing.

A story of hope in what’s to come. I highly recommend it.

Pirates and dinosaurs are two of our favorites!

The simple wording is perfect for young children, and the sounds: Arrh, arrh, arrh; twinkle, twinkle, twinkle; yo-ho-ho, yo-ho-ho, yo-ho-ho make it fun to repeat. The illustrations are colorful and engaging, too.
