Ann Jacobus Why did Ann love this book?

I look out for great stories for younger readers that also happen to normalize mental illness. This YA novel is about Alberto, a sincere and kind undocumented young man from Mexico who lives with his sister in the US and works long hours for her dodgy boyfriend.

Alberto has auditory hallucinations due to increasingly severe bipolar disorder, and then is accused of a grisly crime. Stork shows us how easily the mentally ill are victimized and preyed upon versus the converse, and we fear the predators may pull it off as Alberto is indeed ill. However, with the help of friends and community, heā€™s got a chance in this high-stakes YA thriller.

Marissa Eller Author Of Joined at the Joints

From my list on disabled 2024 debut YA authors.

Why am I passionate about this?

Iā€™m passionate about these books and authors because Iā€™m also a disabled author whose debut young adult novel is coming out this year. We formed the 2024 Debuts group in mid-2022, so weā€™ve been there for each other through many ups and downs along our individual and collective journeys to publication. Our disabilities add another layer of complexity to that, and weā€™ve found comfort and solidarity in each other. Many of them are friends, and I couldnā€™t be prouder to share their incredible books with you. As we approach Disability Pride Month, I hope you consider adding a book written by a disabled author to your TBR!

Marissa Eller Why did Marissa love this book?

Weā€™re back to me being a baby again. As soon as people start dying, Iā€™m usually out. That wasnā€™t the case with Cindy Otisā€™ mystery. I loved the high stakes and the part that disability played in the novel.

It all felt like a thoroughly modern version of a classic murder mystery, with our hearts racing as we reached the end. Also, the fact that this YA novel was written by an actual former member of the CIA is just objectively cool.

Gary Gerlacher Author Of Last Patient of the Night: An AJ Docker Thriller

From my list on thrillers featuring a medical professional.

Why am I passionate about this?

I am a pediatric emergency physician turned author, and I am passionate about sharing an insiderā€™s view of the emergency room, as well as addressing larger health issues that should be more visible to the general public. The emergency room is a world unlike any other, filled with humor, drama, emotions, and energy twenty-four hours a day, and I like to bring that energy to my stories. Iā€™ve worked in many different medical settings, and every day, I find a new story that is worth sharing.

Gary's book list on thrillers featuring a medical professional

Gary Gerlacher Why did Gary love this book?

I never said medical professionals had to be heroes. Dr. Leng is a world-class villain who challenges Hannibal Lecter, and I love how this book shows the scope of destruction that can be created when science is used for evil purposes.

Dr. Leng is so evil you canā€™t wait to read what he does next while rooting for someone to stop him, and only someone as capable as Agent Pendergast can do so. This is the culmination of the battle, and I recommend reading all of the books in this series.
