Book cover of Nuclear War: A Scenario

Leo Barron ❤️ loved this book because...

I liked Annie Jacobsen's Nuclear War: A Scenario because it delves into the terrifying possibility of a nuclear conflict in today's world. The story begins with a nuclear explosion near Washington D.C., and the intensity never lets up from there. I appreciated her meticulous research and investigative skills, and Jacobsen paints a disturbingly realistic picture of what such an event would entail.

Sitting in my reading room, I couldn't help the feeling that I was a missileer stationed in a control center deep in the heart of North Dakota missile field. As I read her book, she seamlessly mixed intense drama with intricate technical descriptions that kept me on the edge of my seat. I was so captivated by her writing that I almost felt like I needed to turn a key and launch a Minuteman III missile myself.

Most important, her writing remains accessible and engaging despite the complex material, making it a must-read for anyone interested in modern warfare, global politics, or crisis response. This book serves as both a wake-up call and a masterfully crafted story that lingers long after you turn the final page.

Book cover of The Terminal List

Leo Barron ❤️ loved this book because...

Despite having watched the TV series adaptation of The Terminal List, starring Chris Pratt, I knew I needed to read the book in order to fully immerse myself in the rest of the series. While Pratt was undeniably captivating as James Reece, Carr's written version allowed for a deeper experience of emotion - particularly rage - than the show could convey. Through vivid descriptions and raw storytelling, I felt my own blood boiling with fury at the tragic loss of Reece's wife and daughter. It was as if I could feel his pain and desire for vengeance coursing through my veins, compelling me to take action and seek justice alongside him.

Book cover of Last Men Out

Leo Barron ❤️ loved this book because...

A powerful and emotional tale, Last Men Out: The True Story of America's Final Hours in Vietnam recounts the harrowing bravery and sacrifice of a small group of Marines tasked with safeguarding the evacuation of Saigon. Written by Bob Drury and Tom Clavin, this gripping book offers a detailed and vivid account of the intense pressure, overwhelming odds, and unwavering determination that these men faced during the chaotic final days of America's involvement in Vietnam.

The authors paint a poignant picture, capturing the heavy weight of responsibility on the shoulders of these brave Marines as they fought to hold their posts amidst collapse. Their story carries particular significance today as we reflect on America's recent departure from Afghanistan, where echoes of the chaos and urgency from Saigon were felt during the evacuation in Kabul. Once again, lives hung in the balance, departures were hurried, and questions about the true cost of intervention lingered.

In addition to its important historical perspective, Last Men Out serves as a timely reminder of the human impact behind the headlines. It is a must-read for those seeking to understand not only these two conflicts but also the courage and sacrifices made by individuals caught up in them.

What is this book about?

The monsoon winds swirling up from the South China Sea had doubled in magnitude as Marine Staff Sergeant Mike Sullivan stood on the roof of the American Embassy, watching North Vietnamese artillery pound Saigon's airport. It was late in the afternoon of April 29, 1975, and for the past eight days the airstrip had been the busiest in the world as flight after flight of United States cargo planes ferried Vietnamese refugees, American civilians, and soldiers of both countries to safety while 150,000 North Vietnamese troops marched on the city. With Saigon now encircled and the airport bombed out, thousands…
