Book cover of Bright Young Women

Anthea T. Piscarik ❤️ loved this book because...

Biright Young Women was not an easy read, and it's a tribute to the writer that I got through a harrowing tale. The author, Jessica Knoll is so clear, sharp, and vivid with her storytelling. Her word choices and descriptions are like diamond cutting diamond. Remarkable and searing. I'm grateful that I read her book.

Book cover of American Dirt

Anthea T. Piscarik 👍 liked this book because...

Putting the controversry aside, American Dirt engages all five senses--sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch---in a riveting story about survival I read about three-quarters of the book before switching to the audio version to complete it. Either way, I was struck by the author's brilliance in writing. Yes, there were some passages of descritpion and plot choices that felt sensationalized . Every now and then, I tired of some of the extraneous details, but it all smoothed over toward the final stages of getting to El Norte. I understand why its controversial for some readers, but I don't have an informed basis to question the autho'rs creative choices or accuracy in retelling a story about crossing the border. My recommendation is based on the writing!

FEAR KEEPS THEM RUNNING. HOPE KEEPS THEM ALIVE.

Vivid, visceral, utterly compelling, AMERICAN DIRT is an unforgettable story of a mother and son's attempt to cross the US-Mexico border. Described as 'impossible to put down' (Saturday Review) and 'essential reading' (Tracy Chevalier), it is a story that will leave you utterly changed.

Book cover of Inside Out: A Memoir

Anthea T. Piscarik 👍 liked this book because...

I remember my first published feature article about a street performer and asking a friend for his thoughts on my story. He replied. "Well, it's not Hemingway." Being a little miffed, I replied, "Well, I don't really like Hemingway." Okay, back to Inside Out. Demii Moore's book is not excellent prose. At times it's not even really good prose. But, it's honest in its emotions and forthight about her insecurities, heartbreaks, and just real in ways I didn't anticipate. I trudged through some of it, and I don't think she illuminated all aspects of her life. But, toward the end, Demi engages the reader in a self-reflection and honest assessment of her life that left me teary-eyed. Raw feelings are not easy to capture in words. In a memoir, I don't look for the best writting, although, sure it helps!. I respond to honest emotions, self-reflection and humililty. I found those at the end of a book that didin't hook me at first, but reeled me in by the end. Thanks, Demi, for keeping it real!
